I met rep @ilhanmn.bsky.social at pride in 2024. I turned the corner & shocked to see her blurted "whoa! that's Ilhan Omar!" she heard and we both laughed

She's genuinely great and I'm thankful she represents me!

Wish the @housedemocrats.bsky.social would stand up for her and our somali community.

“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

The day after a migraine is usually just some photosensitivity for me but today I'm completely scrambling homophones.

Brains are so weird.

It's Matthew Paris time!

That's right: 13th century England's premier mapmaker and monk! A friend to kings, & the kind of man who could draw an elephant right.

He drew the first maps of England (like the one below) and he's the subject my December bonus newsletter:

⚓ the perennial "im pretty sure there's some @earthandaltarmag.com articles about this"
church nerds: has anyone written a history of how theology - especially popular theology - was affected by hymns? Sydney Carter has done more to shape people's beliefs than any Archbishop of Canterbury, but I also suspect that 'blood' and 'good' once rhyming in English mattered.

When I lived in Central America and had to hike to where I caught public transit to the capital after the first 2-3 times I just walked instead of borrowing or renting a horse because it was less of a hassle.
There was never really a point where horse usage reached anywhere near the saturation of car usage, so it's hard to compare. At the highest point there was about one horse for every five Americans. People just walked a lot!
Considering that horses are dangerous and riders are very regularly seriously injured, I wonder what the direct overall injury/death rate looked like when everyone in our society had to constantly ride/drive horses, versus the injury/death rate from cars today?

To be explicit, we executed a German U-Boat commander who said he had to sink lifesaving gear / “inadvertently” kill survivors because it might give away his position, thereby potentially resulting in the loss of his submarine.

We executed multiple members of that crew.
Heinz-Wilhelm Eck might have something to say about this one.
