Hey, I wrote a book.

Did The Science Wars Take Place?

Covers the history and philosophy of a fight in the 80s & 90s between some postmodernists and scientists, with an eye to anarchist interests and lasting political influences among the far-right.

Pre-order here: store.c4ss.org/index.php/pr...
Today, one faction of reactionaries denounce leftists as enemies of science, while another faction of reactionaries happily embrace that same role, attacking science as totalitarian. Words like “postmodernism” and “relativism” get thrown about with fervor but little clarity, echoes of a conflict from decades ago.

Is there actually a physical world and can we know anything about it?

Did academics on the left influence “post-truth” politics on the right?

How could supposed defenders of “science” get lost in a mire of transphobia?

Folks should head over to @fijanational.bsky.social and give them a follow. They should have way more than they currently do.

If you’re following me you’re probably exactly the type of person who should be on a jury. It’s important to know your rights when it comes to voting your conscience.

Reminder of the time the Red & Black Cafe kicked out a cop and FOX tried to make national discourse about "racism against cops" for weeks. They literally did an interview with the cop where he cried about the racism against "blue lives."

(shared with permission) ICE/CBP has been active on Chicago's northwest side this morning—and also met with rapid responders.

Agents reportedly abducted one man from this Dunkin at Belmont and Milwaukee around 9:30am before speeding off.

"most of us never thought to counter that argument because it’s stupid and doesn’t make any sense"

is basically the entirety of the present situation on every front

I think something we have to do more of is talk about how kickass a lot of American cities are because right now some people think they’re run by Sharia Law nudists and most of us never thought to counter that argument because it’s stupid and doesn’t make any sense

BEST BIG CITY IN THE US 9 YEARS IN A ROW.

While critics try to paint Chicago as something to fear, the rest of the world knows the truth — this is the best big city in America.

Today's version of The Colbert Report would have to be a parody channel of all the "investigate the radical left" Andy Ngos of the world: breathlessly taking gopros into goth bars or farmers markets and acting shocked and horrified about the existence of longstanding subcultures. "Hello, FBI?!!"

The nazis themselves were not some clever masterminds where everything they did went perfect. They were also comical idiots who did ridiculous things, like invading Russia in the winter.

They gained power because the opposition couldn’t understand that the fascists were not rational agents.

that said: I think the "it's not fascism unless they're good at it" brand of analysis probably isn't the move

They believe they will never be out of power and relatedly, even if they eventually are, there will be no accountability.

Refusal to openly, credible, emphatically threaten them with it isn't just a failure on the principle of the matter for what should happen then. It worsens the situation now.

You can joke about Pam Bondi’s ridiculous unprofessionalism all you want, but I’m deeply shocked by it: She acts as if she fears absolutely no consequences, convinced that there will be no more political power transfers. — This should shake everyone to their core.

The outrageousness of this tempts me more towards the evil of Cascadian nationalism than I have been in decades.

Something truly galling about jackbooted foreign invaders somehow being allowed to eat our local food.

The only way that you can break out of this losing game where the wife is expected only ever focus on deferential persuasion-from-below is by the wife getting armed and breaking the husband's confident monopoly on available force.

The entire political spectrum is patriarchally coded:

"the left" is a whiny nag that tries to leverage conscience an empathy by sucking up to "the right," which is a big strong alcoholic brute who can't be expected to think and always has the available trump card of just beating/killing his wife.

Y'all who keep lecturing protesters to "not give them an excuse" need to pause for a minute. Imagine yourself telling a DV victim, "Be sure not to mouth off or make any mistakes so he won't hit you. Don't give him an excuse! It's what he wants!" That's what you fools sound like.

Keep in mind that many people who initially claimed he wanted protests so he could militarily occupy cities quietly adjusted that narrative without admitting he did what he wanted, regardless. No “excuse” was necessary. Fascists don't need a reason or excuse.

first of all, fuck gandhi. But secondly.

WE SPENT MONTHS IN 2020 WATCHING COPS BEAT AND SHOOT AND RUN OVER AND EVEN KILL PROTESTERS, AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY GAVE THEM $100 MILLION AFTER ALL THAT
asharangappa.bsky.social
We’re in a moment now where it would be worth people taking three hours to watch Gandhi, particularly the scene of the salt march. There is value to making the brutality of your opponent so plain as day that no one can argue with it. The clarity of that brought down an empire

After Reconstruction, the media refused to believe that white supremacists were massacring entire towns of Black people attempting to claim local sovereignty over their own lives. It is not true that violence, even when it's "plain as day," necessarily moves public opinion.
The white- run news transformed this event from a coup that overthrew an elected Republican government into a horror story of armed Black men, turning the massacre into a legitimate act of white self- defense. The Shreveport Times described the event as “the most deplorable and bloody affray ever perpetuated.” Years after the event, white Democrats would periodically fearmonger about a Black militia that would return to overthrow the government, blaming power- hungry Republicans.

I haven't listened to the new Swift album yet, but I *love* the discourse.

There's something reassuring about one of the most coldly talented people in the world completely fucking up her entire schtick by being comfortable in love and just writing cringe "his dick is big" drelk.

Remember how the Trump administration raged about "transgender mice" because of studies involving transgenic mice?

Well, the woman who just won the Nobel Prize in Medicine wrote her thesis using transgenic mice.
Early life and education

Brunkow was born in 1961 in Portland, Oregon.[2][3] She graduated at St. Mary's Academy in Portland in 1979.[3]

Brunkow received a BS in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Washington in 1983.[4] She received a PhD in molecular biology from Princeton University in 1991, where her advisor was Shirley M. Tilghman.[5] Her doctoral dissertation was titled Expression and function of the H19 gene in transgenic mice (1991).[1]

Pretty much every public statement made by this administration about military and police force has been an announcement that they’re abandoning the strategic benefits of counterinsurgency in order to cull the population and project a patriarchal warrior fantasy.
