There's a terrific page on the Money Saving Expert website where you can find out if you can reduce your car insurance by tweaking your job title. Remarkably if you say you're a ventriloquist your insurance is more than 5× dearer than being a magician.

Haha! It worked!

I scoped out the angle this morning and figured I’d be very lucky to pull it off, but it was surely worth a try, eh?

I really love these occasional threads by George Penney, they’re lovely, whimsical observations of people finding a little moment of joy. They give me a little moment of joy
🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A tiny human (2) is rocking a green jumper with a BIG sequinned T-Rex on the front.
BUT WAIT!
He's not wearing a T-rex jumper,
He IS a T-Rex.
Roaring and stomping.
Tiny T-rex hands clawing the air.
A mini monster rampaging through town. RAR. (1)

Sorry but personally if a miniature horse woke me up from anesthesia by banging out nonsense on a miniature keyboard it would send me into a liminal space between life and death from which I would never return

Parents: Give this quiz to your school-aged kids. And then share it with your own aging parents. You might all learn how to better spot fakes. And you'll definitely learn why, in the age of AI, we have to be more cautious in trusting our eyes.
"The quiz...is a warning. If citizens can’t tell what’s real, how can we preserve trust in elections, journalism, education—or daily life?...isn’t just about innovation; it’s about protecting civil rights, public safety, and democratic trust." Reader EMHinMI www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Few things are as life affirming as this glorious minute or so of footage of a party in Texas in the 1960s with Lightnin’ Hopkins playing guitar and two girls dancing away. (Ta to Alexis Petridis who stumbled across it)

Joe Biden's final request to US servicemen and women before leaving office:

"Remember your oath."

I hope the US marines that Trump is deploying against American citizens were listening.

Oh I'm so glad you asked! I knocked myself out with a frozen bag of omelettes.

This may be one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Just glorious!
1. This IRL version of the Wallace and Gromit Breakfast Machine is definitely art
2. Generative AI could never match this amount of creativity, problem-solving and sheer physical effort
3. The entire video is worth watching:

I couldn’t believe I got this shot. This newly emerged swallowtail butterfly was fluttering in flight so fast it was vert difficult to follow. It was small and fast. Only abt 2 inches big. It was seen at our local conservancy in a research area.

Hi @safety.bsky.app there’s a bunch of “researchers” using Bluesky for an unethical experiment with disinformation AI bots impersonating humans without disclosure or informed consent.

Please shut this down.

“We apologize that you find it objectionable that we create AI bots that shit garbage into feeds and misinform people with fake images”

Just no. Stop. Don’t do this. Research on AI bots can be done ethically.
