the reason the media doesnt cover stories is because right-wing podcasts funded by billionaires set the information agenda in this country for mainstream media

It's almost as if the Enlightenment figures who founded the US had learned the lessons of Europe's wars of religion and created a secular state that would both protect worshippers from political interference, AND protect the polity from becoming dominated by religious sectarians.

The corporatist (fascist) Democratic Party is spending millions of dollars in an attempt to maintain the fascist status quo and convince you that any change from the police state is too much to ask as the democrats plan to continue trumps policies while claiming those pointing it out are dangerous.

It's a weird world when dutifully regurgitating a bunch of carefully curated information that the world's richest man gave you is "fearless journalism," but reporting on how the government is kidnapping innocent people and sending them overseas to be tortured is "not moving the ball forward."

These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

It’s important to keep noting all of this is wildly illegal. But it’s all going to keep happening until all the other people who swore oaths on Bibles to preserve, protect, & defend the Constitution of the United States, so help them G-d, start doing their damn jobs. The law is not self-enforcing.

People have historically, and rightfully, seen the evil of Guantanamo, Abu Gharib, and now CECOT for what it is, but I wish more people would also see the evil in our domestic prisons too. How we treat our most vulnerable, including prisoners, really sets the tone for our whole society.
I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

The parallel fascist state and its machinery of unreality and inversion is rapidly becoming the actual state.

This is why some of us on the counter authoritarian side of academia have been so clear in our analysis of the intentionally maligned social reproduction taking place at cultural nodes.

The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

Perspective matters.

"The country is falling apart"

for whom?

Billionaires are making record profits and have reoriented the governing apparatus to guarantee them even more record-breaking years

That was the goal and it's going well for them

Every single report to shareholders from a large REIT includes something about how it's great that market-rate multifamily housing isn't getting built in high-cost coastal cities because the shortage is what allows them to rent gouge.
New housing stops landlords from raising rents—take it from the CEO of AvalonBay, one of NYC's largest landlords:
"We're well-positioned… we face significantly less new supply. Land entitled for multifamily is hard to come by, the amount of time it takes to get those entitlements… sets us up well.”

This is how to talk to your MAGA relatives.
Telling your MAGA loved one that you hate who they’ve become just pushes them away.

What actually works is asking questions. Bring them back to memories of who they were before they were recruited & help them reconnect with parts of themselves that previously existed!

The Trump regime is breaking the law by not releasing all the Epstein files today and by sticking Trump's name on the Kennedy Center and by continuing to murder people on boats near Venezuela.
The White House is in the hands of criminals, and they'll keep committing crimes until we stop them.

I don’t know how it works at the New York Times, but my editors at The Guardian would never let me publish this if they knew that I was one of the elites who spent time with Epstein. And if I published it without telling them, I would be out of a job.

28 people have died in ICE custody since Trump took office. These facilities are overcrowded & are putting their own profits over health and safety. We need oversight & accountability NOW.

Yesterday I was a bit snide about it, but watching people who are in the mainstream affirming this belief that there was “a culture” of white male disadvantage while this administration attacks civil rights law and deploys white nationalism, raises the stakes and signals the danger we are in.
