Hi! I like local cons & burns, old ("retro") nerdery, and praxis over zingers. I post not-too-private bits of my life, actionable politics and Dropout.TV shit. I follow friends and block strangers who don't introduce themselves. No offense, just say hi!

It's not about not getting what you want, it's about the fear that wanting it makes you an outsider.
This is actually quite brilliant, up to and including the final sentence 🔥

I don't see how these kinds of mistakes can be honest.
Our legacy corporate media was psyched to report that shoppers spent 9% more this Black Friday than last year.

Our legacy corporate media has been reluctant to report that the sales volume was down by 2%.

They spent more because costs are up!

Black Friday sales down 2%, but cost 10% more
The first holiday season where American shoppers spend a trillion dollars, or the first holiday season that cost a trillion dollars?

The yuck of genAI is obvious to anyone who takes a minute to actually consider it.

I literally do not care what a computer comes up with when you tell it to do art, even if it could be ethical somehow.

Moreso, I want human effort to be rewarded, the painting that took years and tears to finish.
I remember Dawning Realization Month for the NFT people too. Think this is going to take much longer because of how wrapped up the whole economy is in this, but it really feels like it's happening.
Anecdotally on twitter seeing a big shift the last few days from every AI slop account saying every other creative field is “over” and they’re in control now to now posting about how nobody likes them and it’s not fair and they’ll persevere and real artists respect and uplift eachother

i really forgot how fun it was to just sit down and make art for myself :')

I’m getting more and more of these too. It’s depressing.
I am by no means a prominent public intellectual, but my inbox is increasingly filled with messages from people who have been convinced by sycophantic chatbots that they have discovered revolutionary theories that entirely upend our scientific understanding of the universe.

I've had a missile blow up next to my airplane, been shot at dozens of times by anti-aircraft fire, and launched into orbit — all for my country. I never thought I'd see a President call for my execution.

Trump doesn’t understand the Constitution, and we're all less safe for it.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

If you're a person of influence in this country and you haven't picked a side, maybe now would be the time to pick a fucking side.

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.

dissatisfied by the New York Times coverage of Zohran Mamdani?

great news! I talked to the guy Thursday about his campaign’s success at bringing community together beyond this election, and contextualized how it’s potentially shifted youth engagement with politics by simply listening @teenvogue.com
Zohran Mamdani's Establishment-Fighting Campaign Built Community for Young People
“What Mamdani has done is not only inspire and mobilize young people, but he has exposed the establishment and some of their calcified views of participation and inclusion.”

This is the worst. Can't wait for the water/electricity hit for the entire area.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced today that Michigan was selected for a “multi-billion-dollar OpenAI Stargate project, built by Oracle and Related Digital,” that will be located in Saline Township.

Are fan conventions doomed? NOOOOO!!! On @ouropinions.bsky.social, we talked to a ton of people who have run scifi cons and asked one burning question: how do we fix fan-run cons? Can we make them welcoming and economically sustainable, so they serve tomorrow's communities as well as today's?
We love science fiction conventions! Especially indie fan-run conventions. But... they basically haven't changed since the 1970s.

How could cons change for the 21st century? We talked to a host of con veterans about panels, venues, volunteers, etc.
