I am, quite honestly, absolutely OUTRAGED at what a collective media failure this is.

Sensationalized it-bleeds-it-leads fearmongering combined w who-cares-if-the-bleeding-stops indifference weaponizes crime in ways Trump has repeatedly exploited.

These declines are MASSIVE.

And the comparative silence in media coverage is absolutely DAMNING.

“Why are ppl always so afraid of crime?”

THIS is why. When crime goes up, media trips over itself to report it.

Falls to pre-war (!!) levels? Just CRICKETS.
I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

Study of over twenty five million people over almost four years finds that COVID vaccines reduced COVID deaths by 74% and increased all-cause deaths by zero. I don’t know how much clearer it can get than that.

"Why is any of this okay with so many of those who once claimed to be free-speech champions or absolutists? Because, quite obviously, they were not."

I endorse. And admittedly feel some frustration it seems @adamserwer.bsky.social and others do too, having seen through this crowd clearly for years.
The “free speech” and “cancel culture” panics have led to overt state censorship because that was always their purpose. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

Consider this when interpreting the term economic anxiety.
the whole AI panic is a grim reminder that nobody actually understands what humans care about: control of other humans. We are willing to pay for stuff that is crafted by other humans because we are animals in a social hierarchy. markets formalize and abstract this but it's what drives them.

You are never going to get an apology or acknowledgement from these people. Twenty years from now the same dipshits are going to be on TV, being paid the same salaries to polish the boots of their bosses with their tongues, and being feted for it. All you can do is take solace in being right.
Seems worth noting at this point that Weiss's internal critics at the Times were correct and her many apologists among elite pundits were wrong

First Elon Musk at Twitter, now Bari Weiss at CBS. What’s next, finding out others who loudly proclaimed themselves free speech champions never valued free speech at all, and were always doing “speech I like must be widely distributed and cannot be criticized, speech I don’t like must be censored”?

When I teaching the Holocaust I note the Holocaust museum’s definition of a concentration camp is a prison whose inmates are denied due process. These are by definition concentration camps.
These are concentration camps. No other way to describe them. Truly horrific, and none of it surprising in the least.
30 minutes. Some deportees described sexual assault. Detainee describes the guard sexually assaulting most detainees. Lights left on all day. Prisoners not given clean water.

Now the DHS tour. Nobody spoke to the detainees. Noem's video was in a different area of the prison.

The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

my very bleak take here is that MAGA would have embraced these if they had just blamed Soros for the assassination, but blaming Israel was a no go.
I'm honestly surprised that the broader reaction from MAGA has been panic over looking bad about the Kirk conspiracy theories (and therefore acknowledgment that they're not true and a bad look) and not just wholesale adoption of them.

the anti-semitic Charlie Kirk conspiracy theories spreading like wildfire seems to have sparked a genuine panic among MAGA conservatives that the brand has turned so rancid, combined with, by and large, a complete inability to acknowledge that this was an inevitable result of the movement.

"Get the principals on camera" is such a telling phrase here, because it tells us that for Weiss there's no world in which the victims of these horrific actions can actually be seen as the subjects of the story: They're background noise, and the people who matter are the ones sending them.
Weiss concluded: “We need to be able to make every effort to get the principals on the record and on camera. To me, our viewers come first, not a listing schedule or anything else. And that is my North Star, and I hope it's the North Star of every person in this newsroom.”

Yup. It's entirely Weiss's defense to the rest of the media class that of course she's a real reporter, she just wants to hold the admin accountable, just not yet
This isn't a coherent reason to pull a story. If they reached out for comment in a reasonable time frame and got none, they should run the story. If they want to pursue follow up interviews with admin officials, OK. But this is a bizarre justification for pulling a finished story.
somebody realized that she was looking like too much of a admin lackey....

It's truly remarkable how there will be news organizations and journalists who correctly identify that RFK is a menace and that HHS can't e trusted when he pushes stuff about vaccines or Tylenol causing autism... but cover the anti-trans stuff like "Well, HHS says so, and we should trust HHS!"
Trans youth healthcare is based in decades of research and supported by every major medical organization in the US. Under RFK Jr, a handpicked panel produced a dodgy report claiming otherwise.

It's a clear example of Kennedy's war on science. So why aren't news organizations treating it that way?

It may pain him to hear it, but the social justice movements he wrote a book railing against were designed to protect against the very kinds of bigotry he belated realizes might be bad (again, because they are now coming for him and his people).

The woke social justice warriors were correct.

The most impressive thing about Bari is her ability to violate ethical principles while indignantly claiming to defend them.
