I think survival games may have helped perpetuate the fantasy that feeding yourself from the earth is easy. "realistic subsidence farmer simulator" is probably not going to be a thing.

It blew my wife’s mind when I told her the dirtiest the air in your house usually is is after you cook dinner on the oven burners.
one thing about the past that people get wrong is they assume pre-industrial people were untouched by pollution, but the reality was their outdoor and especially indoor air quality in pre-industrial times was dogshit because of all the wood everyone was constantly burning (esp in cold climates)
