7/ Pottery/clay/ceramics. It's incredibly humbling - even if you do everything right, it can still come out horribly wrong 🤣
A 4" wide ceramic jar and lid with a vivid blue/green/chartreuse glaze in a turtle shell pattern, the "frozen pond" technique. One of the glazes used in this technique is a "flux", and causes other glazes to move and bloom into different colors. Another of the glazes is a celadon, which doesn't move at all. When you combine dits of the flux glazes with one that doesn't move, crazy organic "firework" shapes emerge in the "frame" of the stable glaze. A stoneware case shaped like a beaker with a very narrow neck. The vase has a drippy glaze on it, matte and metallic and cloudy pale greens and blue-greens. A small plate with a Chinese cloud texture impressed on the surface. The clouds are "outlined" by an underglaze a shade darker than the celadon layered atop it. Half a piece of a small bowl with the cloud texture. Clay is super fragile after it dries but before it's bisque fired, basically just fancy dirt like an anthill. I picked this one up and half of it stayed on the shelf, no idea what happened, likely it dried unevenly and caused this crack.

I see you and love you and love this, Portland. Hope to get back there sooner than later.

Maybe I'll return as Captain Volcano, Longview's mascot of tourism after the eruption. I will be alone and nobody will know who I am. I'll exhaust myself explaining who I am and burn myself out.

GOOD NEWS ALERT 🚨

Today the government relented to pressure from the @livingwageaotearoa.bsky.social and retained the requirement for contracted workers to be paid at least the Living Wage rate in Government Contracts. Around 5,000 workers will likely benefit from this decision

When I published a pro-transit op-ed in the SF Chronicle, holy shit did the fact-checker grill me. Made me give citations upon citations. If only they were one-tenth that rigorous about Heather Knight's columns attacking Chesa Boudin...

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

One thing I don't see a lot of game critics really delving into: We all agree that GamerGate and gamer subcultures have been a pivotal component of this current era... But what you don't see discussed is which games shaped those cultures from a literary movement standpoint. Whose voices are these?

one thing I learned during 2020 is that "less than lethal" munitions are explicitly designed to be shot into the ground so they lose velocity and bounce up into people and the reason I didn't know that before is literally NO ONE has ever deployed them that way.

Reporter's notebook: I actually began working on this story shortly after footage of the incident showed up last month.

But by the time I finally got ahold of folks, the story grew: 2 *other* faith leaders I spoke with *also* reported being shot w/pepper balls while protesting this ICE facility.

it is so important for the public to know about this terrible waste of talent, curiosity, wonder, and progress

too much of science -- how it's made, who makes it, and how and why -- is hidden from public view

these stories need to be told

I honestly think Stephen Miller being such a shrill little bitch is a major obstacle to wearing down the people’s morale, people dont get intimidated into shutting up when Big Brother is furiously screeching that he’s not three apples tall
