For no particular reason, thinking about how the Minneapolis Aquatennial was concocted by business men in 1940 to water down the memory of a 1934 Union victory that happened in spite of violent and deadly opposition

other thing driving people so hard for "promise your vote right now for this shitbag years in advance" aside from the anxiety that cannot be quieted is the gnawing sense that the party CANNOT be budged from the 'no change+abandon minorities even harder' tack, so it's all yelling at everyone else

it's hard to understand how things got so bad. my theory is we didn't have enough thinkpieces by people in their 30s interrogating the politics of cartoons for children. forty or fifty more of those coulda turned this all around

just a maxim for life - if you start a question with "why don't you just" you're both expressing your own ignorance and dismissing their experience. generally people didn't do the obvious-to-you thing for reasons and if you want to know those reasons there are more respectful ways to ask.
Today's Load-bearing Tomato addresses the age old question:

"why don't the devs just [SOCIAL MEDIA OPINION]"

It turns out, "a lot of reasons", but if you never have to test your ideas, you never have to discover why they're not any good.

Another is what happens with everyone still at Whipple?
I'll believe it when I hear from likely targeted folks that *they* believe it's over

If it is true (or whenever it finally happens) then we have a mountain of subsequent questions; Big one is how do we get people back who've been abducted?

large number of losers are basically setting up automated spambots to just go do whatever on the internet to not particular end, straining basically every user-contribution system online; and when those bots encounter human reactions they can be unpredictably malicious. seems fine!

i think a lot of people on here are underestimating how powerful LLMs can be for coding, but i also want the whole enterprise to fail so i'm not going to argue about it too loudly

So the confrontations, violent apprehensions, and general fear bearing down on communities like Minnesota is only the beginning of the nightmare. Behind the scenes, Orwellian anti-judicial antics thwart lawful recourse. And hidden from sight, non-citizens are tortured for being noncitizens.

I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.

I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

I believe this, but also I believe it will not slow AI adoption because the people making the decision to use AI are not the people who will have to do the increased work.

AI is best understood as an exercise in re-classifying skilled labor as unskilled labor, in order to pay less, to break unions
HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW: “.. In our in-progress research, we discovered that AI tools didn’t reduce work, they consistently intensified it.”

I still don’t believe the occupation will end this week or anytime soon but I think it’s worth all of us keeping in the back of our minds what we want “after” to look like. Hearings with testimony? Rebuilding and barn raisings? Will we fight that much harder for the homeless? Will we finally see

New MN state motto: "If you saw something, no you didn't."
How strong is my impulse to not tell on my neighbors is, as we descend deeper into a fascist police state? I just passed a guy eating a snack cake in a grocery store aisle. I just kept walking, didn't alert authorities, didn't negotiate with Tom Homan at all.
