I bagged groceries for Kim Thayil from Soundgarden, New Year’s Eve, 1994. (Paper inside Plastic, if you’re wondering.)
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I’ll remind everyone that Epic and Lovely is also about a young blonde fucking an old man and that I earn out at 1000 copies: annieblooms.com/book/9781959...
Epic and Lovely: A Novel
Epic and Lovely is the swan song of Nina Simone Blaine, the daughter of a long-dead 1950s Vegas crooner and a Texas beauty queen forty years his junior. In the wake of her unexpected divorce, Nina returns to her hometown of Los Angeles to spend her final days with The Friends of the Good Thumb, a support group for patients with A12 Fibrillin Deficiency Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects children of much-older fathers, causes several physical deformities, and results in death around the age of forty. Written as a deathbed letter to the UCLA physician who has tracked Nina and the other Good Thumbs throughout their lives, Nina recounts her final days with the group and with Cole, the charismatic, sadistic fellow A12er with whom she has fallen madly in love, who charms and harms her in equal measures. An unlikely alliance with a tech billionaire, the return of her estranged mother, and the birth of the baby she never thought she’d have force Nina to reckon with the triumphs and mistakes of her life and to fight to leave her child in good hands.

Astonishing graphic, and an unfortunately necessary reminder of the miracle of vaccines; but I would like to speak to the editor about “year 0.” 😒
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.

Sure it was more pervasive pre-, idk, ‘10, but just yesterday I saw a celebrity news headline about how a famous person’s 15 year old daughter “looks so grown up” at a public event. (Reader, she looked 15.) It’s still baked into our culture that teen girls exist to be ogled and interfered with.
I feel like maybe it’s a function of everyone online being born in 2002 but I don’t think most people realize how openly and explicitly pedophilic american culture was until like… maybe 10 years ago
Someone found an mp3 of the creepy "Jailbait" song Olivia Nuzzi released when she was 16 🫣

This should be the final word on Epstein and his typing. It’s not that he didn’t know spelling and grammar; it’s that he believed that everyone else on earth was beneath him. He and Trump were pals because they matched in their titanic narcissism.
Several factors can flow into this: age, gender, class, personal familiarity — but ultimately it’s about power. Do you need to worry about making a good impression on this person or not

TIL Curtis Sliwa got caught cheating in a matzoh ball eating contest. TIL also that it is possible to cheat in a matzoh ball eating contest.
Was honored to help @chana.bsky.social edit this deep dive compilation of Curtis Sliwa lore gathered over weeks. There is so much jaw-dropping material, we simply could not bear to make it shorter than 76 slides.
I’m sorry but you still don’t know enough about Curtis Sliwa

Enough of them realized that this country would collapse in hours if the price of coffee went too high.
🚨 The Senate votes 52-48 to overturn President Trump's 50 percent tariffs on Brazil. 5 GOP Senators break ranks to vote against Trump: Collins ME, McConnell KY, Murkowski AK, Paul KY, and Tillis NC.

Genuinely the moment in US (and to a significant extent, world) history in my own lifetime where shit went deeply, deeply wrong. If you believe, as I do, that a Gore admin would’ve likely prevented 9/11, then even more so.

I’m a bucatini hater. I like short tube pasta, but long tube? The sauce can’t get in there, so what’s the point?
a second day of the same discourse? no. no thank you.

instead I need you to name your least favorite pasta shape

I’m gonna have to break with the dictionary here and insist that “butt naked” is is own thing, and legit.
Not to be THAT dictionary, but…

It’s ‘per se,’ not ‘per say.’
It’s ‘dog-eat-dog world,’ not ‘doggy-dog world.’
It’s ‘hunger pangs,’ not ‘hunger pains.’
It’s ‘one and the same,’ not ‘one in the same.’
It's 'buck naked,' not 'butt naked.'

Literally in 2004 I witnessed the University of Washington’s College Republicans holding an “Affirmative Action Bakesale” in front of the student union building, where I was working at the time. They have, in fact, always been like this.
"they've always been like this" is always a tempting savvy take but it is just not true that Republican staffers were 100 percent open Nazis back in 2004, or hell even 2014. they just weren't
there have been a lot of responses to this arguing that young Republicans were motivated by such feelings but didn't express them openly

and I think a crucial lesson of the Trump era is that there is great value in people not expressing these things openly! that's a big and decisive change!

I’m firmly team text. I will not watch a video on my phone to receive information (I’ll watch a vid for entertainment sometimes). I wish accessibility enthusiasts on this site were as ardent about including subtitles in videos as they are about alt text for pics.
The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video
