I still have to use Windows for some things and it seems to be just about every day now I'm seeing complaints about it sucking in new ways. So here's a little list of tools I use to make Windows not suck by debloating virtually everything out of it that makes it bad and making it more usable. 🧵
Someone complaining that MS Paint removed itself then when they went to the Microsoft Store to install it, it says "The version of Windows on your PC doesn't meet the minimum requirements for this product."

brightwanderer I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned "forever" into the only acceptable definition of success. Like... if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it's a "failed" business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don't actually want to keep doing that, you're a "failed" writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it's a "failed" marriage. The only acceptable "win condition" is "you keep doing that thing forever". A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a "real" friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a "phase" - or, alternatively, a "pity" that you don't do that thing any more. A fandom is "dying" because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things. I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it's okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success... I don't think that's doing us any good at all.

what i learned about publishing short stories online in 2025
This is what I learned about publishing short stories online in 2025: worth doing if you get the chance but don't be too critical of yourself if you can't. Fun as a low cost hobby but remember to keep your expectations realistic. All the websites you're thinking of posting to are either unethical or expensive or user unfriendly so just try and pick the least bad one. As you progress through 2025 your life might change around you. Just try to keep posting short stories online. You can write ideas down in your notes app on your phone. You might spend a fair bit of time looking at the sentence "Superhero whose power is luck" and trying to make it work but there's probably no way to do it that doesn't feel gimmicky. All you really need is three good sentences but you really do need them. If you're publishing short stories online and you have less than three really good sentences your story probably won't work out. Even if every part of the short story you're publishing online is dissonant there should still be a melody between those parts. You can probably also ignore the one that says "Macguffin world", unless you get really crazy with it. And most importantly, have fun

Andrew Kadel @DrewKadel@social.coop My daughter, who's had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen. Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again: When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?" If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing! But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else. It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.

In Mario Party Superstars, the "endless mode" of Hot Rope Jump is not actually endless, and will play an ending scene after reaching 9999 jumps. This takes 3 hours of continuous flawless play, making this the longest Mario Party series minigame with a definite ending.
