It’s quite telling that so many right-wing dealers in nostalgia are embracing the aesthetics of modern AI-generated art. Can’t actually find real images of the imagined past to which you want us to return? No problem; just generate it with AI.

Over the past two decades, the office of the US Trade Representative–which is responsible for developing and coordinating US international trade, commodity, and direct investment policy—has pressured most of the world into adopting these laws, hamstringing foreign startups that might compete with Apple (by providing a jailbreaking kit that installs a third-party app store), or Google (by blocking tracking on Android devices), or Amazon (by converting Kindle and Audible files to formats that work on rival apps), or John Deere (by disabling the systems that block third-party repairs), or the Big Three automakers (by decoding the encrypted error messages mechanics need to service our cars). The rents that these digital locks help American companies extract run to hundreds of billions of dollars every single year. The world’s governments agreed to protect this racket in exchange for tariff-free access to American markets. Now that the US has reneged on its side of the bargain, these laws serve no useful purpose.

I think it’s a reflection of their own attitudes. Both Biden and they were trying to live in a fantasy where those 4 years were a return to normalcy as opposed to the most urgent moment in American history to preserve what was left of democracy.

Seriously what an insane thing
Some sections of the following are copied directly from the account I dictated 28 years ago. As I read these words, most of the details have been long forgotten, and I have the impression that I am reading something written by someone else. Therefore, it seems appropriate to place these portions in italics. The room was darkened. I think the shades were probably drawn. The colors were subdued. The former President was lying in his bed in pajamas. The bed was a double bed that obviously had some sort of an arrangement on it to keep his legs elevated. As we entered, he attempted to get up and greet us, and we urged him to stay in his bed. He insisted on standing and shaking each of our hands. He seemed somewhat unsteady as he stood, but possibly this was due to the difficulty in getting out of this low bed with the elevated foot. He obviously had been briefed as to who we were. He knew that one of us was from Georgetown, one from Hopkins, and one from the Mayo Clinic. We then asked him to lie back down in his bed while we talked to him, and we sat in chairs around the bed. The Secret Service men remained standing. Although darkened, the room was light enough to see the pictures on the wall. Over his bed was what appeared to be a Vietnamese or Southeast Asian picture. On the tables were pictures of the family. A Russian lacquered box was on one bedside table, a Dictaphone on the desk, and a needlepoint design of a Navy goat was framed on the wall. Off one side of the bedroom was a little dressing room and a bathroom. A door opened into the courtyard and also out onto a little terrace overlooking the ocean. Dr. Hufnagel began the questioning, but it was difficult to proceed as we had planned, because Mr. Nixon was anxious to tell his own story in own way. He told us about the onset of his illness, his recent stay in the hospital, and how awful the intravenous Heparin therapy was. He praised Dr. Driscoll, the radiologist, who he described as looking like a long-haired kid. Then noting that his own hair was long he said, Thave nothing against long hair, and then snapped his fingers, pointing to the Secret Service man and said, 'We must get the barber over here tomor row and get my hair cut.' He commented on the skill of the attractive, pretty girl who helped Dr. Driscoll, pointing out that he is still able to appreciate a pretty girl. Dr. Hufnagel was finally able to point out that we were anxious to have him give us his permission to talk to him and to examine him. He said of course we had the permission and to go ahead and do whatever we had to do. He offered to stand up, lie down, take off his clothes or do whatever we wanted him to. He said he takes one or two short walks every day. His leg still hurts him and his biggest problem seems to be that he is unable to concen-trate. He stated that he used to read heavy things such as biography and history, and now he can't read them. He is unable to pay attention even to football games. He has always been 'up,' and a man in his job has to be 'up' all the time, never down and, therefore, he feels there has been a great change in his personality. He now sleeps up to 12 hours a day, while prior to his illness he never slept more than 7. Throughout this monologue concerning his illness and his answers to our questions about his daily routine and well being, he lay on his back gazing at the ceiling and only at certain points during the conversation did he appear to be particularly animated or enthusiastic. Most of the time he seemed very quiet and subdued. After about 20 minutes of conversation, we asked to examine him, and he told us that we would see a 'magnificent physique' and that we were welcome to examine it. He then told us that he had never been sick and had … with the venogram that showed obstruction of the venous circulation on the left. With regard to his general status, he appeared chronically ill, fa-tigued, weak, and is obviously a sick man, compared to the man I had met about a year and a half before. He seemed more ill and weak than one might have expected a month after an operation. His appetite was still poor, and he was unable to regain the 15 pounds that he had lost. There was obvious muscular weakness, and when he stood up for us to examine his legs, he became fatigued and seemed unsteady. He perspired easily with minimal exertion, and his pulse rate was over 90 throughout the entire examination. At the conclusion of the examination, I commented about the Russian enameled box on his table, and he said, 'Oh, yes. You were there as part of the medical science exchange.' It was clear that he had been briefed about my NIH connections. He also commented about the occasion when I had been in the oval office for the American Heart Association to seek additional support for heart research. He then spoke about heart and cancer funding and expressed some concern about the cancer funding policy. He said that he hoped all the money appropriated for cancer was being put to good use. He made some comment about my being born in Richmond, Indiana, and told me that his family had lived in Richmond for a few years before they moved to Whittier, California. This I had already heard from Dr. Hickman. Richmond was a Quaker center in Indiana, and Mr. Nixon's family were Quakers. After this little bit of chit-chat we got up to leave, and he asked us to come with him into his living room and look at the chair he had been given to sit in. We walked across the courtyard, and he showed us a reclining chair positioned so that he overlooked the Pacific in two 400 directions. There was a crystal animal on the window sill which caught the afternoon light and a very lovely view down the green lawn to the ocean with palm trees and other forms of California vegetation. He told us that he spent a great deal of time in this chair and also in his heated swimming pool. We sat down in the living room, and he talked to us about his theories concerning thrombophlebitis. He felt that the medical profession had not devoted enough attention to such a minor but disabling illness. We got the impression that he has very little respect for medical science and for doctors in general. The conversation was interspersed with joking about physicians and the tortures he had been subjected to at the Long Beach Hospital. He seemed to ignore the fact that the venogram, the heparin therapy, and all the things done for him were done in hopes that he might be improved and his life might be saved. He seemed to look on it as a ritualistic torture that he had been forced to endure. He continued to talk about his illness, relating it to his international diplomacy. He said it all began when he was having talks with Brezhnev and was forced to sit for eight hours a day across the table from Brezhnev, keeping alert and 'up' all the time. He also talked to us about the disarmament talks that he had started and which had just been concluded by President Ford. Finally, he walked us to the door, shook our hands, and crossed the courtyard back to his bedroom— and we left the house. We boarded the golf carts and were driven back out of the Casa Pacifica into the Coast Guard station.
