Welcome, traveler!

Your host is an aspiring author, with passions for GSRM activism (specializing in Poly and GNC advocacy), gaming, and philosophy.

My intention for the account is to discuss my book more casually, as well as commentary on current events; I'll have a secondary once I re-pub.

Y'all gonna start acknowledging the parallels yet?

Y'all gonna start defending art, intimacy, and sex as basic human expressions?

Y'all gonna start realizing that these deranged puritans don't have an ounce of goodwill in their bodies and literally just want to control every aspect of our lives?

I spoke to a dozen professional concept artists working in games about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs easier, even if it's just used in "very early ideation stages."

Zero said "yes." Most said it made their job harder.

I learnt a lot about concept artists. You should too!
We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier.

Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder.

Concept Artists Say Generative AI References Only Make Their Jobs Harder
“The ‘early ideation stages’, when worlds are being fleshed out by writers and artists, are literally crucial to the development of a game’s vision,” said one artist.

Happy to share one of these myself:

Graphic art isn't my bag. The few things I have an idea for are largely just silhouettes. Relative sizes. Major features.

This is the picture of the main cast first draft I handed off to my artist.

He was thrilled with both how much and how little detail.

This. It's really pretty simple:

"If I wanted it my way, I'd do it. If I want you to do it, I want you to do it *your* way."

This is how you work with any and all creatives. It's really just basic care, at this point. And the results are *always* superior.
Thank you! And yeah, both in sketches and script, I try to leave artists room to make things better. I find the more controlling writers are, the less room they leave for artists to contribute something rad.

This just boils my blood.

It is even worse that I know so many people who won't care or who will cheer this.

We are facing it and we're thanking them for letting us know not to buy their products. If they want to put generative AI in their process that's their choice. We're making ours to not condone that practice and put them on the naughty list.
"It’s time to face reality, AI is here to stay" - Kingdom Come: Deliverance head Daniel Vávra says Larian got a "crazy shitstorm" for doing what "absolutely everyone else is doing", and that while he's "no fan of AI generated art" it's going nowhere.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.

Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

Kojima's a crazy person.

He's also excellent and correct in (too?) many cases.

I do not enjoy his works, but this man is a master artist and I respect him for everything he's done.

I endeavor to be half as crazy as he.

(I'd like to be a mix of him and Matsuno, I think. Maybe Funky Uncle, too)
Keep thinking about this term "pre-digested" that Kojima used to describe art that's instantly gratifying. And how it's better when people grow to love something instead.

I've gravitated, as player and designer, toward the latter, but that term "pre-digested" is new and feels very strong.

I'm hoping our Anti-AI push *also* scoops these fascy fucks out of the digital gene pool, as it were.

Let's go, gang!

This is actually something addressed by a lot of writers.

One of my favorite recent quotes about writing:

"Most of my time writing is spent in Minecraft. Most of the rest is spent on walks with my dog and wife. A bit of it is typing, but really that's just busywork."
Its so funny seeing companies go "oh we use GenAI for ideas when we're stumped!"

You know what I do for inspiration? Read a manga, play a game, watch a movie, go outside and peoplewatch, etc

There's so many things I CAN do for inspiration instead of asking ChudGPT to generate ideas for me

I grew up with gaming; my only real outlet.

In tabletop, I loved giving space for people to build their interactions. I loved building worlds for people to delve into and play around with. I loved surprising people with the reactions to them.

Now I'm a writer and an aspiring game designer.
With all this awful news going on i wanna ask this question once again to fellow artists and general creatives. What got YOU into art? what sparked that motivation to start writing? what made you wanna pick up a camera and start taking pics? Like share with us your reasons.

As a reminder: we can win, so long as we give a shit.
just a collection of "inevitable" multi-billion dollar tech that was going to be the future of everything until everyone in the audience who was supposed to just get on board said "lol no"

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.

if you’re not an artist with experience in studio environments it might be hard to appreciate just how much genAI feels like a conman claiming to have made a gun that kills artists and every ceo lunging for it and pulling the trigger a few times

learning the gun doesn’t really work isn’t a comfort

Guess I'm finally going to try Zen out. The statement from them gives me hope.

I've been using FF since around 2005, when I jumped from IE. I've seen a bunch of slide from them but they bought a lot of goodwill over the years...

Still: It's been a great ride, right up until now

So much this. There's a reason I'm documenting all the steps, thoughts, and lore. There's a reason gaming history of development is so fascinating.

It's so fucking cool to see the original idea before it had to be reduced to feasible and shipped! Especially in the rare cases that can be fixed!
Personally, for me, concept art / cutting room floor stuff is almost *better* than what we end up with. And revisiting concepts to make new better shit along with the stuff you originally went with is *chef's kiss*

Old bean yells at cloud, etc

If you ever think you're bad at your job, it's always helpful to remember that there are people with less skill and qualifications who are getting paid purely for their arrogance and audacity.

I'm reasonably sure my cat could provide more valuable feedback.
And let us never forget one of the worst game-reviews ever commited to paper. This was in ASM issue 3/91 and ooooh boy... I´ve made a quick translation for those not fluent in what the author here passes off as "german". Enjoy!
