Again, I don’t want to get too personal but the most tepidly political, structurally vulnerable people in my life were protesting ICE all week. The juxtaposition here is just wild.
The degree to which the Democratic Party is failing to meet this moment is staggering. And INFURIATING, when contrasted with the courage on display from ordinary people with far, far less power & protection.

No one can tell me a single good use for it, for me. I have asked. Not a one.
What am I supposed to use it for? To summarize my emails? Too long, wrong. To write things? Too long, wrong. To plan trips? Planning is FUN and why would I outsource that? I played with it a bit six months ago, it was meh.

Also, I hate its enshittification of search results with my whole soul.

Yeah no country in the sort of western academic diaspora can take advantage of U.S. brain drain for the same reason— there’s no war machine to fund it. It’s all a parasite of global capital. Gotta bring your own money, compete on foreign merit rules, & there’s no good takeaway Chinese food
Irish institutions must find matching funds and lolol the priority areas. I also love the idea that lots of people will bring private and industry funding with them?

Someone defended AI by saying that it uses about the same amount of water as a golf course. Considering that I hate golf with every fiber of my being, partly for its environmental impact, this did not persuade me.

That’s my thing. All I have heard about my entire life is men’s many problems. Whomst among us has ever had the freedom to ignore men’s problems?!!

All nonsense. Men need socialism and a nap.

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky
Just received an email saying that it's not advisable to include the following words in future applications for research funding to the US DOT. Here we are.

BREAKING: ICE raided a home with 20 armed agents, ripped a mom & her 3 daughters out of bed in their underwear, held them in the rain for hours at gunpoint—with ZERO charges.

They’re U.S. citizens. This isn’t immigration enforcement. It’s state-sanctioned terror.

this is what @tressiemcphd.bsky.social has been saying, yeah

Americans don't recognize their poor quality of life bc we've been able to mimic affluence

and that's not going to be the case for most of us much longer
I suspect that the relatively low cost of Treats in the U.S. has made many people more willing to accept batshit housing costs, and if the Treats start to dry up….
americans are a people motivated by treats if these tariffs dont kill the economy itself, theyll kill everyone’s motivation to actually work lmao

Pretty clear admission that the NYT killed a story about the implausibility of the lab leak because editors believed bad-faith Trump Admin sources over actual scientists.

And, finally, by a handful of big publics: U. of Washington, Wisconsin, Rutgers, SUNY Buffalo and Stony Brook, UC Riverside, UVa, UMD.
A powerful call has just gone up on the website of the @aacu.org : “A Call for Constructive Engagement” signed by almost 200 college & university presidents (more sure to join), from community colleges to R1s! #academicsky #edusky @academic-chatter.bsky.social www.aacu.org/newsroom/a-c...

As I said, most Americans are easy to convince that the state is broken because it has worked so well for them.

Of course, those pillaging the state knows it works. That’s the point.
I think it’s worse than that. They want to break it because they know it *does* work, and they don’t want it to work for anyone but them.
It works. The government here largely works. Because we are so spoiled by how well it works, we are letting a fool convince us it is broken.

Another story that must be told:

An ICE agent grabbed Merwil Gutiérrez. One of his fellow agents said, “No, he’s not the one.”

Merwil Gutiérrez is a 19-year-old asylum applicant who lives in the Bronx. He was the “wrong one.” ICE wasn’t there looking for him.

“Take him anyway,” came the reply.

I'm going to a thing with other humans but when I get back I'll make a little reading list so you can educate yourself and others on why the NYT is an objectively bad for democracy news outlet we've been tricked into respecting. Skeeting this to hold myself accountable
