If the DEA had killed 80 innocent Americans in the course of apprehending one drug dealer, there would be riots. But we are so ghoulishly indifferent to the lives and humanity of people abroad that it's barely even part of the conversation.
A reminder that the US killed 80 people in Venezuela, and it would be nice if the US media cared enough to think that the life of a grandmother in Caracas whose building is destroyed by a US bomb matters as much as the life of a person in the US.

I wrote section 230 to protect user speech, not a company's own speech. I've long said AI chatbot outputs are not protected by 230 and that it is not a close call. Given that the Trump administration is going to the mat to protect pedophiles, states should step in to hold Musk and X accountable.
I am not a Section 230 expert but being that Twitter is creating and publishing these photos I wonder if they actually have any civil legal protection? @kenwhite.bsky.social ? @akivamcohen.bsky.social ?
What X is allowing Grok to do is unlawful or regulatory-illegal in multiple jurisdictions, creates clear DSA violations, and continues despite regulator scrutiny. The images do not need to be pornographic, non-consensual sexualised or intimate depictions are enough.

I ran my bike into a parked car too, when I was a kid. Pretty sure I was looking back at my friends.

Fortunately, I wasn't going very fast. Just a little peddling around the neighborhood.
Riding my bike and deliberately didn't look where I was going and then crashed into a parked car. I still have the scar.
What's the most ridiculous way you ever hurt yourself? I got out of the tub, skidded in water and tripped over the toilet. Ankle sprain.

😅

I need to take the rest of the night off. The messages in my inbox today, from people desperately begging me for help bc they've learned that with 1/1/26 they've lost Medicaid or ACA coverage that keeps them or their kids alive... and there's nothing at all I can do for them.

Chile’s statement just now is a very good example of this, drawing on their own history of foreign interference to land the point
Most of these countries are having no trouble noting that the Maduro regime was systematically repressive while also pointing out that the U.S. has violated the UN Charter and international law. This is not actually that complicated.

THREAD: Viral misinformation on US capture of Nicolas Maduro - 4 January

This video, shared by Alex Jones and others, falsely claims to show millions of Venezuelans in Caracas celebrating Maduro's capture.

In fact, it shows anti-Maduro protests in July 2024 over a highly disputed election.

Not to be all “back in my day”, but every time I watch an old movie and they say “mind if I smoke?” I instantly flash back to a PSA on buses in the 90s. And I feel like we need this kind of blunt messaging on public health stuff.

It WORKED. It’s still in my head 30 years later.

MAKE THEM DO THAT

I am so gd sick of hearing “well it wouldn’t work/succeed” offered as a justification for not doing something, which is a complete failure to grasp how sometimes if not often “succeeding” is less straightforward than that

You can lose every fucking battle and still win a war
“Oh but if Democrats did that Republicans would just vote it down, wouldn’t convict and would rally their base to defend Trump’s crimes.”

Yeah, okay, make them do that then.

No.

Social safety nets crumble when we wrap them in neoliberal rhetoric aimed at dividing people and deluding them into thinking that everyone--except some tiny group of perfect poor--should be able to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, even if their boots have been nailed to the floor.

Reminder that almost a quarter century ago, Schumer voted for the Hague Invasion Act, declaring that the US would militarily invade the Hague were it ever to be prosecuted by ICC for war crimes.

Biden did too, it was an overwhelmingly bipartisan agreement to be unaccountable to international law.
Look at how many names on this list are *still in power*, still kicking around. They weren't exactly young then, but now a lot of them are much much richer.
