Again, "I only make CSAM for money" would not help an ordinary person's defence, but would aggravate their sentencing.

we've seen plenty of evidence that a lot of people have trouble remembering *other humans* are conscious

maybe it's less that they see computer programs as human than they they see humans as computer programs

seen multiple people with this take, very sympathetic to the people buying into this shit, that it's *really hard* to remember a thing that you can have a conversation with is not actually conscious, and what can I say but "no it's not"?

I don't think I'm exceptional, here

I do not "have trouble" with this and am increasingly disturbed by the idea others do
the thing that strikes me about the Grok "apology" thing is that even those of us who are against "AI" as it is marketed to us have trouble not falling into the basic fallacy that they are trying to sell us, i.e. There's A Little Guy In There

This professor has never posted Mamdani, Spanberger, or even used the word election in a post to refer to this one before today. I diagnose him with the most common disease of the academic: talking out of his ass on a topic he has no actual credentials in or special insight regarding with authority.
Btw, the press obsessing about Mamdani seems weird. He seriously underperformed the Democratic vote in NYC compared to recent elections, barely scraping 50%. Moderate Democrats in VA and NJ dramatically overperformed. That seems the real story

if you see anyone expressing shock that a candidate who exudes warmth and authenticity and wants to improve the quality of life for working class people won over a rapist whose entire campaign was
"that guys a terrorist" that's not a smart person. you don't have to listen to that person anymore.

Every Centrist two days ago: *pushes up glasses* Actually the extremely handsome and popular guy cannot possibly defeat the hated sex criminal. It's impossible because in America people do not like it when you help them. If you don't believe this, you're not a serious thinker.

been having a chuckle about this. looking on that subreddit, the mods are constantly running searches for and deleting posts that mention mamdani. the posters have been saying things like "the frontrunner for mayor" and so on to evade getting banned lol
The Reddit community r/Democrats has a conspicuous absence of any news about Zohran Mamdani today. But that's by design.

The moderators have rules that ban people from talking about democratic socialists.

The "don't talk about social issues" strategy only works if you *admit that was your strategy after the fact*. We're in this doom loop where Democrats try something, gaslight themselves into believing they didn't try it, then decide to try it again.
"if we just don't talk about it, they can't hit us for talking about it" has been thoroughly discredited but we're going to keep trying it because the point was always that party elites/centrist Dems don't want to talk about those things, not whether it was good strategy/messaging to do so!

I think any story about Trump's autocracy should be mostly about the people and institutions who failed to stop it. This guy isn't a political genius, everything else just happens to be rotten. 'Toddler Consolidates Power In Household' is a story about incompetent parents, not shrewd maneuvering

I appreciate that dedicated tech outlets like 404 and the verge (mostly) meet this stuff where it's at and try to seriously engage with the implications of its use while legacy outlets continue to treat it as indistinguishable from actual magic
the nyt posts this stuff like avoiding AI for 48 hours is hard and meanwhile i have literally never once intentionally used an AI program for anything ever

There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

I think it's a belief that some people might vaguely hold, but that the far more important impulse is just simple anti arab sentiment. And that rapture talk kinda of functions as a fun curiosity distracting from more practical and important neo-conservative reasons for American Zionism
