What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

THIS
Protip: if your coworker works entirely remotely, and you schedule a meeting with them, you need to *explicitly specific* if it's in person.

There is real antisemitism on American college campuses, but I do not remotely trust this project to evaluate it in a way that is fair-minded or helpful: www.menorahindex.org
The Menorah Index
The Menorah Index is an effort to evaluate American colleges and universities in a way that serves Jewish families, students, and donors.

The only way to square the circle of simultaneously insisting antisemitism is eternal but *not* finding it in the obvious place, namely, Christian anti-Judaism which would undermine the ahistorical construction of a "Judeo-Christian" synthesis, is to lean hard into Islamophobia. And so they do.

Not only is this construction of "Judeo-Christianity" completely ahistorical, but it also conflicts with their Judeopessimism, their attempt to say that antisemitism is eternal and ontological, such that criticism of the state of Israel can be homologized onto medieval blood libels.

People who refuse to give up using Pharisee as a pejorative remind me of the French folks who refused to give up the term for ghost writer that literally translates to n-work work. There are non-offensive, older alternate, but why switch when it’s been the Done Thing for ages?

The problem is that even tho there’s an alternate, you’ll still find the offensive version in dictionaries as a translation option. This includes Google Translate. Similarly, if you look up Pharisee you’ll still see “hypocrite” as a synonym. Dictionaries aren’t arbiters of social acceptability.

I am quoted here so let me be totally clear on my take: Jonathan Greenblatt has made a calculated choice to aid the consolidation of authoritarian power by the MAGA movement in exchange for the suppression of criticism of Israel. And the consequences for American Jews will be devastating.
I spoke with 40+ sources for a look inside the Anti-Defamation League. Here’s some of what I found.

ADL’s gentle response to Elon Musk’s infamous salute was partially driven by his support of Israel. To ADL, that indicated he didn’t have “antisemitic tendencies.” (1/x)

I don’t think gentiles will be able to comprehend how fucking devastating the devolution of the ADL has been for the American Jewish community. Greenblatt and his ilk are actively harming us via their choices related to Israel.
