A 2021 study from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics showed that 52% of all trips in the U.S. were less than three miles. 28% of trips were less than one mile. With slight tweaks, many of those trips could be done on bikes, e-bikes and other light electric vehicles, and walking.
I'm tempted to listen because I've yet to read an argument about "car addiction" that factors in that the continental United States covers 3.7 million square miles.

A new study models 20mph/30kph effects on cycling and traffic. A useful nuance is "negligible impact on journey times...due to lowered speed limits largely being applied on local streets instead of larger, ‘busier’ roads designed to maximise the flow of traffic"

“The study’s findings show that targeted cycling policies, such as … dedicated lanes and improving bike parking, were major contributors…. But equally important were measures that discouraged car use—like low-emission zones, traffic restrictions, and fuel price changes.”
“Paris is an incredible example of how a city can transform when political will meets smart data,” says one of the report’s lead authors. “We wanted to understand exactly which factors made this happen.”

This is Chapel Hill’s estimate of the cost of damage from flooding earlier this summer. It’s not clear if the cost for Greenways includes the planned armoring against future floods. Seems like ~$6M is going to be a hard nut for us to crack. We better get used to not using the damaged sections. 😱

Interesting study. Chapel Hill is considering building two-way lanes in a couple of upcoming projects. I do wonder if Barcelona’s design of separation between the lanes is safer than what seems more common, having them next to each other.
Are two-way bike lanes more dangerous than one-way bike lanes, as many cyclists suspect?

No. (at least, not in Barcelona)
