A frustrating thing about living in the American Empire is that because we are so big and powerful we've already solved many of the hardest problems in the past, but because we are so parochial and myopic we've already forgotten the solutions.

Here are the Subway/Metro Station design guidelines that were compiled by UMTA/USDOT in the 1970s in an attempt to prevent WMATA-style cost overruns again.

It got shelved when everyone at UMTA got laid off and we forgot it. But it's prescient about cost drivers -- rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/11352

(The reason is that a major party realized that carefully coded racism was really effective at winning elections.)

BART and WMATA were being constructed contemporaneously with most of the Tokyo subway system. The main difference is that we just kinda stopped for no reason, and other countries continued.

no I think Trump v US was pretty much the killing blow and it's just a matter of making the normies, including the electeds, understand that

When you say "the Supreme Court is no longer legitimate" it doesn't mean "I think they've seriously compromised their moral authority and credibility". It means "I don't believe their rulings are legally binding".

Nah but yeah I think you’re right and idrk why it’s the case but as a guy who doesn’t like wearing hats, I’m fine with it. I did recently get into bandanas tho.

This is correct. Also, the Supreme Court is illegitimate.

(It's a big problem!)

Fundamentally, I don't think this is "Trump demands a ceasefire" I think this is "Netanyahu gives him one"

My confederate neighbor told me the submarine keeps drowning his sailors so I asked how many sailors he has and he said he just goes to the navy and gets new sailors afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding sailors to the ocean and then his commanding officer started crying
“The confederacy sent into action the world’s first combat submarine, the CSS Huntley, which sank three times in trials, drowning the crew each time (including its inventor Horace Huntley) before sink a blockade ship near Charleston in 1864 while going down itself for the fourth and last time”

When you are handing things to Trump the burdens of proof on everything go way up, "they're all aipac stooges" is not enough. Obviously with Biden, we know he and his people suppressed reports of genocide, refused to stop weapon shipments at any point, rerouted arms from Ukraine, etc.
zas.bsky.social
Not here to defend Biden. Very much an accomplice to genocide.

If elites will acquiesce to authoritarian consolidation because the economy seems to be chugging along and they personally are doing fine, then that is a problem but also fortunately a fixable one.
zas.bsky.social
I also think that if you're handing anything to Trump you need to do a lot more to back up the "reasons to believe not to" for Harris.

I think it's obvious that Israel is more comfortable slowing/stopping the war under a Trump presidency and that also it is now almost a year after the election so it's not like Trump didn't let them continue rampaging and murdering for months more,

I am not sure at this point if Dems at the federal level have a better near term strategic option than “let Trump wreck the economy and hope voters blame him for it”. There are more options at the state level but they are really screwed given how the media has lined up behind Trump.
kwcollins.bsky.social
If Dems win the standoff and get their policy demands, yes they will have substantively helped millions of Americans (a good thing, to be clear), but also they will have kept Republicans from a self-inflicted wound in upcoming elections

yeah, ezra basically believes that left-liberalism is doomed and we have to dislodge the current ruling party at whatever cost with whatever coalition we can piece together. its extrapolating way too much from 2024 which was more about the overarching landscape than the policy or messaging

just my two cents on Ezra Klein: he is generally good on policy and his work on things like housing is helpful

the problem is that his punditry is misguided for two reasons:

1) he is not skeptical enough of right wing bad faith

2) he is acting like the U.S. is Hungary, where the right is popular

So cool that whenever someone asks the president, “did you eat the Lindbergh baby” he’s like, “no but I’d be allowed to, I have the right to, I might do it later”

NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is now unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war

The TikTok outlines that a specific goal of these animations is to multiply their reach by cultivating secondary coverage

And indeed, dozens of major outlets like BBC, CNN and Sky News have aired them, in part or in full, often without context
