Readers of the iPaper expressing the views of the real silent majority: those who aren’t frothing with prejudice, those who think decency and responsibility should win out, those who have genuine legitimate concerns about social division and civil unrest…
those who never seem to make the headlines.
Work at root of migrant dignity I read lan Dunt's impassioned piece ("Let asylum seekers work", My View, 21 August) and heartily agreed with every word. Give people back their dignity and let them work; tap into the extraordinary resource of skilled and motivated people, desperate to find safety and a secure life and who will repay the opportunity with an enthusiasm for work which seems to be lacking in this rich entitled country. We depict ourselves via the popular press as willing participators in the malicious, self-interested bile that pours out from political animals of every stripe. Shame on us. Turn the tide and let the world hear the voices of the large numbers of kind, compassionate and principled people who still call themselves British. DIANA PAYNE MARLBOROUGH, two things: that one bad apple shouldn't spoil the whole barrel and that we mustn't rush to condemn every migrant because of the actions of one person; and secondly, that we have forgotten what kindness is. Britain has always been a welcoming land for those in difficulty and in the past we have encouraged those with nothing to make something of themselves, to find sanctuary, to make a life. What has happened to us? BRIAN MOORHOUSE As a volunteer with Herts Welcomes Refugees and teacher of English in one of the hotels, I can only say that all the people it has been my privilege to meet, just want to perfect their language skills so they can be productive members of society and pay their taxes like everyone else. Migrants can't answer back.

They have no voice.

So they make the perfect scapegoat for the pent-up rage of the angry, self-loathing far right who can unite around this issue.

In addition it gives the media something to write about in the long summer recess.

That is what is really going on here.
