This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.

The Office of Special Education. The CDC on-the-ground operations. Attacking vaccines.

I saw this on Threads (my mistake) and it absolutely infuriated me. Oh no, this creator, who was always making toyetic properties and probably isn’t seeing a ton of money from them these days, didn’t provide an adequately emotionally fulfilling experience at their temporary place of business???

I met the creator and animator of He Man and the Masters of the Universe today and told him what an honor it was to meet someone who shaped the very foundation of my childhood and of millions of kids in India. He just shrugged his shoulders and asked me if I wanted to buy the $60 Funko he was selling at his booth in New York Comic Con.
Reminder to not meet your hero's.

In America, the average reactionary conservative often appeals to "freedom", but they aren't using the term in any way most people would recognize.

What they often mean is that a particular "way of life" or set of conservative folkways should be allowed to exist entirely unencumbered.

my understanding of the ongoing covid pandemic is def connected to my experience of HIV as a kid. Condoms as harm reduction was really drilled in. Now masks & outside parties are harm reduction. It also showed the fact that we must organize to demand government research treatment & offer care/cures

From what I learned (also from private school) - the flip side of this is also meaningful.

The presumption of guilt and punishment enacted by the powerful does not mean one is guilty.

It means simply that one has been deemed an outsider.

And outsiders lose.
