Thank you all again, the world is full of very good people.

My dear old pal was then told by his mother:

“That was the best mass any Irish Mammy could hope for, and that’s the bar you now have to meet.”

Perhaps the greatest compliment I’ve ever received.

And perhaps the most Irish Catholic complaint I’ve ever heard :-)

A dear old friend from my schooldays phoned me a few days ago, to complain about how beautiful my Mother’s funeral was.

His mother, who couldn’t attend my Mum’s funeral, was a good pal of my Mother, and had since watched her funeral mass a few times on YouTube.

I’d like to say a sincere Thank You to all of you who responded to the post below (here and on LinkedIn)

It has meant the world to to me. I have not responded to some of you yet, but I will.

In true Irish fashion, I’d also like to share a funny story (My mother had a great sense of humour)…

With deep sadness I post this. My Mother, Catherine Keohane (née Donohoe), passed away a week ago. Some on here met her but wouldn’t have known.

The simplest way I can describe my Mum is that she was my best friend, and the best person I’ve ever known.

Below is my favourite picture of both of us:

His Majesty King Charles III has announced that he will host German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender for a State Visit from 3-5 December. It will be an incredible moment for 🇬🇧🇩🇪 relations and the first State Visit by a German President in 27 years.

I spent 3 weeks on a cargo ship in the Arctic, from Canada to Greenland. Our only company was blizzards, killer whales, thick fog and icebergs. Here is my story about how the West is lagging seriously behind Russia in the Arctic, and why it's so difficult to catch up

Inside the West’s Race to Defend the Arctic
Sailors scanned for icebergs on a nine-day journey to the U.S.’s northernmost military installation this summer—part of an effort to erode Russia’s vast advantage in the region.

Julius Caesar conquered Gaul in 51 BC and died in 44 BC, therefore all of Asterix's adventures took place over the course of less than seven years, probably much less since Asterix's chieftain was at the battle of Alesia, were it is probable Asterix and Obelix's fathers died. In this essay, I will

🇵🇱 My @thetimes column: Poland’s economic miracle

12 out of 17 Polish regions are now richer than West Wales. It has faster internet, cheaper electricity and more high speed rail than Britain

When it comes to regional development it’s the UK, not Poland, that needs to catch up

I posted a joke about my then 2y old running around the house screaming 'order' because I watched so much House of Commons debates during Brexit.

Have it on authority that this was shown to Speaker John Bercow by an MP and isn't it great that we can have these kinds of silly connections sometimes?

Good chat with the FT’s Martin Wolf, on China’s global economic strength, while Trump damages US.

My only caveat is that China remains more a regional than global security power - so far - largely due to immediate neighborhood insecurities (I.e. border disputes).

Exactly, Putin is an opportunist, in other words.

And the West could reduce his opportunities…

I agree. I've seen Putin described as risk-averse; I don't think that's right. He takes risks that other leaders wouldn't, but only when he assesses that the likelihood of an effective response is low. The West has yet to change his assessment that he can keep pushing us back.

Here is @nigelgould-davies.bsky.social on Russia’s disruption campaign against Europe. I’m not sure I would be so optimistic on the Kremlin being worried by US & EUR behaviour, but the conclusion is unshakeable: absent a serious response, this will get much worse.
