Wolfsbane, or monkshood (Aconitum napellus), is a deadly flower tied to werewolf lore. In medieval Europe it was said to repel or cure lycanthropy, the power or curse of turning into a wolf. Some tales claim witches used wolfsbane ointments to change shape. #FairytaleTuesday
Collage of wolfsbane and werewolf lore. Top left: 1941 pulp illustration of a werewolf crouched in moonlit woodland (Weird Tales, “The Werewolf Howls”). Right and bottom: close-up photos of purple wolfsbane (monkshood) flowers with green foliage.

#Birdtober Day 13: Gray Heron

Bonus Great Blue Heron from last year's Birdtober. I was nervous about this prompt because I wanted to be sure they looked different enough without drawing the full body for either of them. I'm happy with how they both turned out!

Marker drawings of a Great Blue Heron and a Gray Heron, with parts of other birds drawn on the same sheets of paper visible.

Macaulay Culkin needs his own interview show/talk show. He’d be fantastic at it and his brother could show up and add comments from the peanut gallery. They’d get people to spill their guts. We’d all laugh and cry.

If you are interested in old New York gay history, watch old episodes of The Emerald City, the first TV show made for gay and trans people. 1977, right before AIDS. My old film teacher Gene Stavis produced and interviewed in it. m.youtube.com/watch?v=2eQW...

I rewatched Kurosawa’s movie Dreams because I wanted to see the fox wedding. The movie is prettier and sadder than I remembered. I do think the watermill village might be my new happy place for awhile. I hope the foxes forgive him.
A serene river with little stone watermills off to the side and a rickety wooden walkway next to grassy banks and giant trees wildflowers sprinkled along the shore. A Japanese child walks almost out of frame to the left on the wooden walkway. Man is following several paces behind on the right. From the movie Dreams by Kurosawa. Mount Fuji melting and darkned in front of to nuclear explosions and people scrambling at the foot of the mountain. From the movie Dreams by Kurosawa. A row of peach orchard spirits or ghosts? They stand wheee the beautiful peach trees would bloom A little Japanese boy holding a knife in a bamboo case standing in from of a beautiful wildflower field. He’s wearing a white a blue robe with a blue belt. The wildflowers a vibrant cheerful colors but the kids face looks concerned. From the movie dreams.

Here’s the Evil Eye of Antioch mosaic in full with the waves border. I like how the dogs feet and tail break up the dark border. #MosaicMonday
Roman mosaic of the Evil Eye from
Antioch. The eye is pierced by a trident and sword, pecked by a raven, barked at by a dog, and attacked by a centipede, scorpion, cat, and snake. A horned dwarf with a gigantic phallus crosses two sticks. Greek annotation "KAI SU" meaning "and you (too)". Dated to the 2nd century CE. A dark inner border broken up by the dogs standing feet and tail. And a dark wave border with tan sky, then and off white border with a light bright thin stripe finish. Roman mosaic of the Evil Eye from Antioch. where creatures and weapons are so busy attacking the mosaic eye they won’t be able to attack the home or its people. A little bit of #folklore and good luck for #MosaicMonday

What’s worse is I still have 3 address about 10 phone numbers that are from 1990 still clogging my brain. I could use the room.
bleary.off-the-records.com
If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?
