7/ Pottery/clay/ceramics. It's incredibly humbling - even if you do everything right, it can still come out horribly wrong 🤣
A 4" wide ceramic jar and lid with a vivid blue/green/chartreuse glaze in a turtle shell pattern, the "frozen pond" technique. One of the glazes used in this technique is a "flux", and causes other glazes to move and bloom into different colors. Another of the glazes is a celadon, which doesn't move at all. When you combine dits of the flux glazes with one that doesn't move, crazy organic "firework" shapes emerge in the "frame" of the stable glaze. A stoneware case shaped like a beaker with a very narrow neck. The vase has a drippy glaze on it, matte and metallic and cloudy pale greens and blue-greens. A small plate with a Chinese cloud texture impressed on the surface. The clouds are "outlined" by an underglaze a shade darker than the celadon layered atop it. Half a piece of a small bowl with the cloud texture. Clay is super fragile after it dries but before it's bisque fired, basically just fancy dirt like an anthill. I picked this one up and half of it stayed on the shelf, no idea what happened, likely it dried unevenly and caused this crack.

ICE is randomly targeting peaceful protesters because the point is to terrorize the public into accepting martial law.

Indiscriminate attacks send the message that there’s nothing you can do to stay safe.

The regime wants you to cower at home and cede the streets of your city to their control.

One of the terrible things about the conservative elites’ attacks on higher education is that they are giving their constituents the impression that the universe isn’t big, complicated, and fascinating — that it really does take this many people to work out how even a small fraction of it works

Madness. In jail, in another state, since Sunday, clarinetist Oriana Korol is a 38-year-old child and family therapist, a U.S. citizen and mom with a 3 y.o.

Sound dangerous?

The Sheriff says she is being held on suspicion of assault on a federal officer. But, not charged yet?

Habeas corpus, kids!

I've had a few quiet notes of support from people at other publishing companies about this. But there's also a fear of calling Google out, for fear of the power it has. I get it, but it's pretty lonely out here.

This dynamic of Young Republicans staking out positions far to the right of older, more "normie" Republicans has been a feature of the US conservative movement since the 1960s. Over time those further right elements just got incorporated into the mainstream. bsky.app/profile/seth...

In 1966 the New Jersey Young Republicans had a habit of singing racist and antisemitic songs at their gatherings. The lyrics to one went “Riding the Reich in my Mercedes Benz, shooting every kike, saving all my friends." Hartford Courant, 13 February 1966.

They don't have actual problems irt oppression so they need to make up reasons to feel aggrieved and victimized.

It's why they're so obsessed with microaggressions and then mention this shit lol.

I'm generalizing, but why do conservatives remember political irritations for so much longer than liberals?

It's been 17 years since Obama said some voters "cling to their guns, to their religion" and I heard a senator denounce that last month.

Obvious theory: Media ecosystem puts it on repeat

Why do adherents of the constantly-looking-backwards ideology constantly look backwards?

Because liberals tend not to directly insult conservatives on account of their humane and inclusive worldview so right wingers have to look back further for insults to GOP voters. Meanwhile this weekend every major Republican congressman said I hate America.

Conservatism is fundamentally a fan culture. It has lore and is invested in long-term character development and canonical debates within their ideological universe in ways that aren't quite the same among liberals or the left.

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

It's always striking seeing other academics talk about their academic parents and be reminded that close to a quarter of all tenure-line academics have at least one PhD parent.

That's not a critique, but I always wonder how different it would be to have a parent who already understood academia.

She starts with cuddling with their behind, then gradually moves up the cuddle escalator to full-on drape.
Tess (fluffy black cat) cuddles with Pixel (Cocoa Siamese), but only with the end of his body that's not pointy or bitey. Almost as if they weren't even cuddling. Tess and Pig cuddle with Tess's face closer to his. They're next to each other like two loaves of bread on the counter. Tess has draped herself over Pig's body like a cape, her left paw extended to hug him My blissed-out polydactyl Tess purring happily with her body covering half of his, a paw extended so you can see her extra toes.

Based on their positions, Tabs was there first, Tess crept in behind him to steal a snuggle. Tabs scooted over to "make room" for her, considered leaving, but the sunlight/companionship convinced him to stay.

This is exactly how she asshole-whispered Pig, a Siamese who was certain he’s not a cat.

I couldn't find Tablo and was briefly horrified, thinking he'd gotten out. I also hadn't seen Tess and wondered if somehow SHE had gotten out.

I haven’t seen them cuddle like this ever before.

Tess has been super lonely since her BFF Pig passed in April. Maybe she’s winning Tabs over?! 🥹

Lastly, you must be your own advocate and constantly pester your doctors to keep investigating the root causes and recommend specialists. Some will blow you off and just say, "Do some PT." I eventually lucked out and got a great surgeon who cared and really wanted to solve this dumb problem. 🙏
