7/ Pottery/clay/ceramics. It's incredibly humbling - even if you do everything right, it can still come out horribly wrong 🤣
A 4" wide ceramic jar and lid with a vivid blue/green/chartreuse glaze in a turtle shell pattern, the "frozen pond" technique. One of the glazes used in this technique is a "flux", and causes other glazes to move and bloom into different colors. Another of the glazes is a celadon, which doesn't move at all. When you combine dits of the flux glazes with one that doesn't move, crazy organic "firework" shapes emerge in the "frame" of the stable glaze. A stoneware case shaped like a beaker with a very narrow neck. The vase has a drippy glaze on it, matte and metallic and cloudy pale greens and blue-greens. A small plate with a Chinese cloud texture impressed on the surface. The clouds are "outlined" by an underglaze a shade darker than the celadon layered atop it. Half a piece of a small bowl with the cloud texture. Clay is super fragile after it dries but before it's bisque fired, basically just fancy dirt like an anthill. I picked this one up and half of it stayed on the shelf, no idea what happened, likely it dried unevenly and caused this crack.

I wonder how many of these folks cut their teeth on grand-strategy computer games — such as CIVILIZATION — where just deciding "we're no longer a democracy... we're now operating under despotism because that'll be advantageous" is just a mouse-click choice.

I think we got ourselves into this state as a society by believing in the tool-sellers’ promises and now they are pushing a way to make the chaos more unaccountable and less connected to our actual desires (AI) as a solution to the problem they made

I counted up the number of ways (platforms, accounts, apps) that people in my professional and personal lives plus healthcare systems and kid’s school are contacting me and uhh. This is objectively impossible.

I believe we need to be able to understand what is happening to us. That's the sole reason for my work on knowledge ecosystems over the years, including Covid Tracking Project. A lot of things *can* be known, even in this political blender. We deserve real knowledge, not close-enough flyby guessing.

I don’t know the name of that meme cat, or how to describe this expression, but it's hysterical how closely Tablo's face mirrors that one when Hilo is trying to steal his territory. "Try me. Please. I just need an excuse." is the best way to explain it.
Tablo (the black fluffy cat) has an expression of barely being able to tolerate his brother, almost a warning expression. He usually gets in a slap fight with Hilo when he looks like this.

Whistling when ICE is about to kidnap someone for no reason is incredibly effective. They know what they are doing is wrong and will scatter in the wind when too many witnesses gather.

🧠 Report on the zoological collections made in the Indo-Pacific Ocean during the voyage of H.M.S. 'Alert' 1881-2.
London: Printed by order of the Trustees, 1884.

[Source]
Illustration from an 1884 report on zoological collections in the Indo-Pacific by H.M.S. "Alert," showing detailed, labeled pencil sketches of three crab species: Euxanthus tuberculosus (A), Hypoecius punctatus (B), and Banareia inconspicua (C). The drawing highlights the crabs’ carapaces, claws, and leg structures with close-up views of their distinctive textures and anatomical features, such as tubercles and spines. The image reflects 19th-century scientific documentation methods linked to Darwinian natural history and species classification during exploratory voyages.

There are a tremendous number of ICE watchers out in Rogers Park this afternoon after some early morning abductions.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.

That seems to be the subtext - that it will "ask again later" and eventually you will run out of refusals.

FWIW according to the article, turning it off right now does not work at all, it throws an error and puts it back on.

“I spent three nights and three days in federal custody. During that time, I was never told what I was charged with, was not allowed to shower despite being covered in tear gas and pepper spray, had no phone call to my family, and no access to an attorney.” - George Retes, U.S. citizen and veteran.
I’m a US citizen and a veteran. ICE arrested me for no reason.
Jailed for three days without an explanation or ability to notify anyone, George Retes argues the only path to healing starts with the government taking accountability for its actions.

A shocking amount of men seem convinced that if they evince enough self pity they will be delivered of respect, status, and the sexual attention of women. Really can’t overstate that this is not how it’s going to work out.

Much more generally, on a variety of fronts, we are seeing the attempted wholesale conversion of the coercive power of the state into a tool for extremely small, organized groups of people to command obedience (bullies, universities, schools, businesses, etc.).

Everyone knows witnesses won't come forward, people will suffer in silence, etc. The scope of this harm is hard to overstate--nothing short of millions of people enduring grotesque physical and sexual harm.

And this leads to one thing, among many, that scares me a lot now: Things were already very bad on this front, but the unhinged gestapo tactics of ICE grant enormous power to predators across society in positions of power to prey upon vulnerable people: employers, abusers, etc.

But when you realize that most violence is not by strangers (hence police violence being large %), you see why it's vital for cops to obscure it: no one believes more $$ for punishment bureaucracy is a solution to the reasons people **in some kind of relationship with each other** hurt each other.

A simple answer is that the news makes people extremely scared of strangers--the person next to you at CVS, the person walking down the street, the unhoused person in a tent, the anonymous burglar, etc. These are the kinds of crimes associated with surveillance, policing, etc.

First the basics: The vast bulk of physical and sexual violence in our society is *not* perpetrated by strangers, but by people who know each other. Obscuring this fact is a critical feature of copaganda in the news. People are shocked to hear it. Why?
