Some horror films don’t end. They stop.
There’s no sting in the tail, no final jolt meant to wake the audience back up. Instead, the film leaves us with an image that settles rather than strikes. We took st some of our faves at #NightTideMag 👻 📽️

losing my mind at the "she should have followed directions" people

really? really? you're cool with "if you don't follow directions, they get to kill you"? that seems like a good state of affairs to you? that seems like how law enforcement ought to work: instant obeisance or death?

Pelgrane are looking for play testers for my upcoming Halfling-detectives-solve-murders-and-eat-cake roleplaying game, THE MERRYSHIRE DETECTIVE CLUB.

There's a sample scenario, THE CASE OF THE GREAT RING, in the playtest packet, so all you need is a few players...

Announcing my new novel, NIGHTJARS, out September 29, 2026 from St. Martin's Press. Pre-orders are open now.

This one is leaner, bloodier, darker, and full of my grim heart. I can't wait for you to nestle under its wing.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but cops are not allowed to shoot people just because you didn't do what they said.

That is called murder when they do that.

Some cops are working hard to convince people otherwise.

you extremely do not need to screenshot and spread around tweets demeaning Renee Good. I cannot stress enough how much you do not need to do that.

Human brains feed off of negativity. Negative thoughts are easily digested and play in a loop in your mind all of the time. The reality, however, is that there is also A LOT OF GOOD happening every single minute. You have to do more work to pay attention to the good but it's worth it.

Back in my teens, I once made a fantasy world map by tracing the flaking paint on my bedroom wall. I wish I still had it!

This is what people mean by "you gotta kill the cop in your head"

If in 2026 you still imagine that "she should have complied" is cause for being murdered in the street, you're doing their work for them

In short, every shithead you don't ban costs you ten other customers.

"A [potentially regular] customer doesn't say anything but never comes back" doesn't register with you as An Event the way that kicking someone out (temporarily or permanently) does, so it's extremely easy to miss it.

my hot take is that I don't think it's this website specifically that's toxic. the Circumstances are toxic and nobody really knows what to do about it so they come online and scream. and if I may offer an alternative: actually going outside and screaming feels better.

I think it's actually the same phenomenon as hating your spouse. We expect and assume that our (heteronormative) partners will hate our interests and require them to be exiled to that one space. And people fall into the groove of this all the time without questioning.
A "man cave" is like the weird hetro-obsession with hating your spouse. If you need a special room for all the things you like because the person you're with hates it all - you're with the wrong person. Relationships that make you miserable and lock away your interests are BAD. C'mon now.

Many happy returns, Kathe Koja!
Happiest birthday to the visionary @kkoja.bsky.social , my favorite living writer & a major creative influence. She's also one of the realest and most gracious people I've encountered in this world of fiction.

I love the model work in Alex Proyas' Dark City (1998).

Also, the architecture that fits in with many places and eras, an atmosphere inspired by Fritz Lang and Murnau, a story reminiscent of The Maltese Falcon in a sumptuous sci-fi concept... and a great cast 👌

This movie is aging very well.

The degree to which Pascal's Wager depends on a sucker God who you can lie to without consequences astonishes me. A wager for people who see not just the mortal realm, but Heaven itself, as a swindle waiting for them to seize it.
Sounds like he’s playing Pascal’s Wager.
