Taken from a teacher friend. The money is there, the government is choosing to use it for roads, landlords, tobacco companies, etc.
There is money. What there aren't any of is teachers. And nurses. And fire fighters.

I don't need more money. I would like more money. The new English curriculum for Years 9 and 10 was released last Sunday. I now have about two months to totally rewrite two years worth of courses, come up with work, assessments, and also find tens of thousands of magical dollars for new resources, so that we can implement them at the start of next year. (That time-estimate assumes I'll work through about half of my holidays, as I usually do. I could work through the rest. You know, like politicians don't.) I'm paid okay - I'm not paid enough for that.

I know the argument that money is thin on the ground, and we can't be greedy but let's do the stats:

This government gave $300 million worth of tax breaks to the tobacco industry.

This government has given $2.9 billion (with a "B") of tax breaks to landlords.

This government has committed $4 billion to build some more roads in Wellington.

This government spent $140 million to not buy some ferries. No, you read that wrong - they didn't buy ferries. They _didn't_ buy ferries. They spent $140 million to not-buy them. There is no $140 million, _and_ no ferries.

This government has committed $10 million to 215 students because those students go to schools that David Seymour likes.

If there was no money, I'd get that. But there is money. What there aren't any of is teachers. And nurses. And firefighters.

Looks like the government is aiming for the Occupy Wall St strategy of denying the protestors have any message at all.

And RNZ are governmental minions, parroting this uncritically.

With severe wind and heavy rain warnings forecast tomorrow by MetService New Zealand please travel with caution, secure loose items around your property, take care around our coastlines and roads, and avoid parks and reserves during strong winds.
For safety reasons, all Council facilities including libraries, pools, landfill, recreation centres and community centres will be closed all of tomorrow.
Rubbish and recycling collections will go ahead at this stage, however, we recommend holding off until next week's collection if you can. Visit the Council's website for more information about facilities and services impacted by the severe weather warnings.
Here's what you need to know:
Be careful walking, cycling or driving - there could be surface flooding, debris, fallen trees, powerlines, or damaged infrastructure.
Coastal roads may be impacted by high swells - be particularly careful when driving.
.. Secure loose items around your property to prevent damage, and clear nearby sumps and gutters to prevent flooding.
Rubbish and recycling collections are planned for
tomorrow, but we recommend, waiting until next week's collections. If you have to, put rubbish and recycling bins out by 7am tomorrow (not tonight if you can avoid it), and secure the lid with a wheelie bin clip if you have one and bring in empty bins and crates immediately after collection.

Unions are political organisations designed to promote and defend workers' rights.

It's literally what they do!!!!!

Nz National Party X post: Today's planned strikes are unnecessary and politically motivated by the union. Workers' pay claims will only be settled by negotiation, and the Government is ready to talk.

Also worth noting that our worst paid nurses in New Zealand, the ones whose pay equity claims were thrown in the trash by this government aren't able to join the strike today. But remember that primary health care, aged care and Māori health service nurses stand in solidarity with the strike.
