A reminder (from my 2019 @theatlantic.com reporting) that as military families go without pay this shutdown, many of them are single-paycheck households relying on the servicemember's income because the spouses have been pushed out of the workforce.

The Dismal Career Opportunities for Military Spouses
For the partners of America’s active-duty service members, finding a stable, well-paid job is often impossible.

This is an incredibly weak place for them to be. If they end up tear gassing a bunch of librarians and kids in strollers at the family picnic that is No Kings it could trigger the type of support that ends a regime.

I'll see you on the 18th.

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

to be clear i would be much less stressed out if we actually existed in the world where LLMs were glorified markov chains/autocomplete and we understood exactly how they worked

The only hard problem here is "what if you get buried alive or some other fate worse than death situation" but deciding it's a better idea for your body to just inevitably fall apart after just 80 years or so is a pretty extreme solution

“The problem with billionaires isn’t that they’re hoarding money that would otherwise pay for a Scandinavian social utopia. It’s that their money has become a source of wildly distorted political power that allows a few men with extremist views to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”

I am not an expert on the military, but I had thought that even adversarial countries establish lines of communication in order to avoid inadvertent conflict. trump sees Illinois and other states governed by Democrats as hostile countries and acts as if he is at war with them
gregsargent.bsky.social
JB Pritzker also talks about his inability to get any top Trump officials on the phone, probably because they *want* this to be experienced as an invasion. He explains why this could make law enforcement officials on both sides *less* safe. Total dereliction. 3/

Pritzker also says ICE's treatment of peaceful protesters has gotten so bad that Illinois law enforcement has to protect them *from* ICE.

"We’ve got Illinois State Police standing in between ICE and the protesters," he says.

This is the America Miller wants. 4/

One of the reasons to reject the obligatory demands for conservative affirmative action in liberal institutions is that the people who take advantage of it almost invariably function as a fifth column explicitly dedicated to destroying the institution from within.

This is a person who is still taken seriously and published in left-wing spaces.

To be clear: No, most Israeli Jews are not descended from Polish Jews. And even for the minority who are, it would obviously not be safe for them all to go there now, given the Polish government.

Thiessen having a good chuckle about his fired liberal colleagues - some of whom he worked with for 15 years - is a good reminder that token conservatives at mainstream news outlets are/were there to destroy them, not to contribute to them.

the thing about the hype around AI is that it's mostly not saying, "oh you can use AI to make new kinds of odd art!"

it's saying, "AI can allow you to make art exactly like old art but somehow without artists."

I wrote about Chicago: "Is this city burning? There is a definite answer to the question. In all these cities, the answer is no. No American city is currently on fire, and if Chicago is a war zone, it’s because it’s being invaded by the president."

it should be a tell about what's happening in the media now that most mainstream commentators seem openly frustrated that polling does not blame democrats for the shutdown

Nothing remotely resembling an insurrection is happening anywhere in the country. Any violence associated with protest has been isolated, mild, and, in nearly every case, instigated by federal law enforcement. If we let Trump get away with calling dissent an insurrection, our republic is over.

President Trump is "seriously" considering invoking the Insurrection Act in order to more easily deploy National Guard troops to major cities as part of crime crackdown, NBC reported on Wednesday

When prices were going up under Biden there was a constant deluge of news stories about it because the media did not like Biden and wanted him to lose. Under Trump there is not a constant deluge of news stories about coffee prices because they like Trump and want him to win

everything is on fire these days, sure, but how is it that 50% of all news stories are not about how I just spent $20 on a bag of store brand coffee at fucking costco

A lot of this is just practice but one of the most useful things you can do is get really into a text that has the depth for a lot of people to have written about it from multiple angles. You will learn a lot about critical reading from, say, Robert Alter’s annotated translation of the Hebrew Bible
otter-wa.bsky.social
Do you have any tips/resources for getting better at critical reading or writing in general? Most of my higher education kind of glossed over this part (trusting that the students already knew all this) and I always worry that I'm one of the kids described in these types of pieces.

All servicewomen serving in combat roles already have to meet stringent gender-neutral physical standards.

But Secretary Hegseth is intent on smearing those women as unqualified — and pushing all women out of military service.

From eliminating the Pentagon’s gender advisory committee to misrepresenting women’s combat readiness, Hegseth’s record shows a clear campaign against women in uniform.

I think choice is becoming a victim of technological advances and player expectations. If you choose whether Bob or Jim live in a SNES RPG, you’ve got a different set of pixels and text boxes. Now you‘ve got a new set of voice lines, Hollywood tier animations, etc.
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.
