He's good! Sorta eclectic Puerto Rican hip-hop/R&B/reggaeton star who's managed to cross over to the mainstream. The entire reason the current administration is mad is because they're insane white supremacists and he's a Spanish-language artist performing at the Super Bowl.

I'm also amazed that Nic Cage has never shown up in a Miike movie, even during his "will take any part in any movie" phase. His collaboration with Sono was pretty disappointing (also disappointing: Sono) but Miike would absolutely have absolutely been on his wavelength.

agreed! and mostly for the better, imo

it’s a cinephilia less interested in classiness, more open to underground work, genre, etc, and i’ve noticed younger cinephiles jumping far more quickly into experimental stuff

In general I think there’s been a major shift in the past 20ish years where people went from learning about films in books and review sites to Letterboxd/social media and podcasts, which has reshapes the canon in pretty dramatic ways.

That said, I thought his semi-recent crime comedy First Love was pretty great, and IMO underseen/underappreciated, it reminded me of both the early Coens and Tarantino.

I think it's less that he "fell off" and more that he had a natural heyday and peaked. His high-water mark in terms of mainstream/critical appeal was probably 13 Assassins and his remake of Hara-Kiri about 15 years ago, since then he's focused a lot on kid's movies and manga/video game adaptations.

Not to mention that he's also overlooking that Strangelove's specific flavor of mad science came from being a Nazi eugenicist, something that very plainly didn't exist then either. But of course Thiel wouldn't see that as a character flaw, because that's just what he sees in the mirror every day.
