AI is coming for the Great Lakes. The "world's most-powerful AI data center" in Wisconsin will gobble up 8.4 billion gallons. Even the average data center uses 300,000 gallons a day. Oh, and they're getting fat tax exemptions.

While I greatly appreciate a new @divvybikes.bsky.social station closer to the Music Box, this location (midblock on the sidewalk far from any curb cuts) was easily missed and is a terrible placement!

When I started collecting stories for AI Killed My Job in the summer, I heard from Jacques, who headed up support operations at a small tech company. The company was training AI on he and his colleagues' work, and he was concerned.

When I checked in with him last month, he had been laid off.
When the AI boom began, copywriters were singled out as one of the jobs most vulnerable to AI. Now, three years later, I wanted to hear from workers on the frontlines of the industry, to hear what had actually taken place on the ground.

For many, it was even worse than they'd feared.

Copywriters were one of the first to have their jobs targeted by AI firms. These are their stories, three years into the AI era.

An unending stream of luxury housing being built, and the city allows our SROs and low-income housing to deteriorate. And CHA currently letting the southern half of Lathrop sit mostly empty and unrefurbished. It just shouldn't be that hard to have a place to stay.
One of Uptown's last single-room occupancy buildings was ordered closed due to dangerous conditions, causing residents to scramble to find affordable housing.

At SNL I worked with artists who made the funniest, stupidest graphics in no time flat. Some of my biggest jokes would have been impossible without these geniuses building an insane image or finding the perfect real-life photo of a politician. Sucks that their work is being pushed aside for slop.
SNL used AI art tonight, multiple times.

This is the outcome transphobes want, if course -- it is up to cis people of good faith to decide if this is the society you want.

not just the safe streets project getting cut in this proposal, which is bad enough. It's the neighborhood infrastructure line item that safe streets got lumped into--this means stuff like sidewalk repairs and lighting. Even if your alder labels themselves as progressive--they need to get an earful
URGENT ACTION NEEDED:

Mayor Johnson's 2026 bond proposal defunds safe streets infrastructure by a whopping 70% – putting our communities in jeopardy by threatening the progress we've made in preventative infrastructure.

Email him and your alderperson today and tell them to reverse course!
Tell the city NO to 70% cuts to safe streets funding!

To this point, now that the map is official, unfortunately for the 32nd Ward less tape always seems to be cut when it comes to eliminating hurdles to build housing in our ward. That pink 'Zone 8' with all the Waguespack imposed restrictions definitely sticks out.

For anyone still interested, Milwaukee (sb) was clear but there are frequent flat ice streaks where snow melted, drained across the bike lane, then re-froze. Logan Square sucks, just take the lane. Nothing seemed to have been salted but I didn't slip at all (once I got out of my alley). #bikechi

NEW: In rural states, USPS is a major source of good jobs with benefits — and pays workers without college degrees better than jobs like fast food and retail.
