Of course, social work is a flawed field and there are genuine criticisms to be made, but I think those are currently far outweighed by the problems caused by lack of funding both for social work and the community services their clients need (which diverting funds from the police would help).

When I volunteered at a DV shelter, the social workers knew every charity, government benefit, and generous individual in the area. There was a dentist who did pro bono work on anyone connected with the shelter (bless him).

I'm talking safety planning, collecting replacement ID documents (when abusers hide them), preparing an exit strategy, securing a place at a shelter, coordinating medical care... THAT'S the help you need when you're a victim. And the police aren't gonna do any of that with you.

3) Cuomo clearly doesn't know what social workers do. They're not gonna try to teach you breathing exercises—that's what mandated "anger management" classes for offenders are, and they don't work—they're gonna coordinate the services to get you out.

So the insinuation that this huddled victim wants to call Abuser Central for help would be laughable if it weren't so infuriating. And she also knows damn well that if he isn't taken away in cuffs, a police visit will only put her in more danger.

It's well-known among people who work with DV that if anyone goes away in cuffs there's a very real possibility it's the victim. Not only is the abuser calm while the victim is a mess, but policing has an astronomical rate of domestic abuse, so they're likely to sympathize with abusers

Many DV scholars have pointed out that abusers are very skilled at playing victim for an audience, because they're the ones in control. So when the knock at the door comes, he'll be calm and collected, while you're a destabilized, crying mess. And he says "look what I'm dealing with".

2) There's an insinuation that police would actually *do* something about domestic violence (DV), which, if you've ever contacted the police over an incident of domestic violence (👋), you'll find laughable.

1) Abuse transcends socioeconomic status. People often *think* it's more prevalent among poor people—probably because if you have more means it might be easier to leave or you may not need to go into a shelter. Or it can be easier to cover up!

My friend told me that her 14 year old son started doing laundry on Sundays for some of his elderly neighbors. He doesn't charge for the labor. And now he is the most popular person in the building and has non stop pies, cookies, and cake. The 14 year old should be our model of modern masculinity.

Yeah I'm not familiar enough with the mythology to be able to recognize details/significance of Fenrir depictions. I think the reason I was thinking it was Celtic was that the images I was finding on news sites were suuuuuuuper grainy.

So that timing and trajectory is *highly* suspicious, because to me, that absolutely looks like he got the second most widely known Nazi insignia tattooed on him and *extremely* shortly thereafter, left the Marines and served out in the reserves at a time when almost NO ONE was allowed to.
