Shirley Povich writing in 1962, with the most immaculate burn conceivable of the Redskins awful, vile owner George Preston Marshall, the last NFL owner to insist on an all white roster: "Jim Brown, born ineligible to play for the Redskins, integrated their end zone three times yesterday." RIP WaPo.

I have printed out copies tho. Which is basically the only way to find my 2006 winter Olympics blog. Which really feels appropriate
A silly little story: 20 years ago the WaPo sent a big team to the Winter Olympics and that included Dan Steinberg (@dcsportsbog.bsky.social) who wrote the “Tales from Turin” blog, which was a thing of wonder and is now depressingly hard to find in the archives.

the Washington Post layoffs are awful in every regard. I am under no pretense that Trump-glazing collateral damage was intended as an intelligent biz decision. However, I want to address closing its sports desk.

If you want to do journalism that gets eyeballs, sports is the LAST desk to close.

WaPo specifically making cuts to its most subscriber load-bearing sections like Sports and Metro while doubling down on commentary, which frequently does little for your bottom line, really underlines how much this is about what they want the Post to be, rather than what a good newspaper actually is

Bezos isn't destroying the Washington Post because it isn't profitable. He's destroying the Washington Post because he's calculated that a robust free press threatens the ability of his class to warp society around their interests

Sports. Definitely not something people like.
Speaking to WaPo employees, editor Matt Murray says cuts are about “positioning ourselves to become more essential to people's lives, and what is becoming a more crowded, competitive and complicated media landscape, and after some years when, candidly, the Post has had struggles to do that."

This is a great one from colleague Nicole Yang on Mack Hollins.

Mack Hollins wants to help the Patriots win. He wants to help you open a jar. He wants to help everyone with everything.

I used to be sad about what was happening to the newspaper I took great pride in for the 48 years I worked there. Now I'm just furious. Bezos did to The Washington Post what Trump did to America.

NEWS: The cuts were so severe that at least one department head asked to leave The Post rather than be included in the planning.

Peter Finn, The Post's international editor, requested that he be laid off once he learned about the scope of the cuts to his section.

1. Build huge subscriber base by telling them their $ supports democracy.
2. Don’t establish other revenue sources.
3. Rug-pull subscribers by pushing opinion side to the right.
4. Subscribers leave, revenue falls.
5. Enact crippling newsroom cuts.

Celts-Bulls trade:

— enjoyed having Simons here. Explosive scorer, made the effort to be a complete player, seemed like a great kid.

— willingness to give up that offense suggests they’re sure Tatum will be back.

— Vucevic is an admission that Garza isn’t playable in most playoff situations.
