Some thoughts on this interesting exchange between @robertsaunders.bsky.social and @igmansfield.bsky.social To Iain, I would suggest his piece underplays the mounting evidence of harm to the British economy. And to Robert, an alternative argument on EU membership 'expanding Britain's global role'. 1
Post-Brexit Britain should look to Canada, not to nostalgic dreams of Empire, as its model and inspiration.

The “presidential” way Ursula von der Leyen runs the European Commission is hurting Europe, Nicolas Schmit, who was a commissioner during her first term, has told POLITICO in an interview.
Von der Leyen’s management style ‘not good for Europe,’ says ex-commissioner
Nicolas Schmit said the Commission lacks “strategy” and “courage” — and failed to stand up to the U.S when it sanctioned Thierry Breton.

It's six years today since Britain left the EU.

I wrote this on Brexit day in 2020, about the strategic dilemmas to which European membership had once been the answer and that would now reopen once Britain left.

I'd stand by most of it today.

All part of the absence of a story of the world or the economy behind this government. Engaging with all of the US, EU, and China is the right approach, but isn't obviously founded on solid thinking as to why.

A cross-party failing since 2016. What is the UK to be?

Brilliant summary by Ian Dunt “Watching him talk is like being accosted by a man on the train on your way home from work, sat hunched against the wall of the carriage in a cheap suit, nursing a can of Carling, desperate to complain about the staff.”

I think at this point the UK has accepted Paddington as the Death Bear, collector of souls. So, I think as a nation we should start smearing marmalade on the eyes of the dead and whisper “fare for the crossing”. It’ll feel weird now but, in three of four generations, no one will question it.

Labour's decline started when they decided to let the grannies freeze to death just two months after they got elected. Even if a reform was necessary you don't start your term with such a negative policy. People won't forget or at least not the grannies. One failure after another since then 🤡

I think it’s an interesting idea but I don’t see the numbers for this to happen especially in 2029. I think ultimately the next step will be SM access with 4 freedoms, ECJ and £/€ contributions in some sort of 3rd pillar EEA model. Definitely in the EU orbit but albeit a rule taker before an A49.
Full EU membership should be put to the public at the next election. It's time to return home.
