- Instead of molasses I added 1tbsp of maple syrup. The real stuff, not Mrs Butterworth's.

- In both the cake and the frosting I substituted maple extract for vanilla extract, in the same amounts.

I made the following changes to the recipe:

- I bought sweetened applesauce instead of unsweetened by mistake. Per the nutrition label, 1 cup of applesauce contained 30g of added sugars, so I decreased the amount of brown sugar from 350g to 320g.

So I decided to bake my own maple spice cake that's an actual spice cake.

The recipe I used is this one, baked as a three (8-inch) layer cake, with a corresponding increase in the amount of frosting I made.

The inspiration for this is that Mrs CJ and I were grocery shopping recently, saw a "maple spice cake" in the bakery, and decided that sounded good and we should get one—only to discover later that it was vanilla cake with "maple spice" frosting. Sadness!
