I guess what I'm ultimately saying is that you have to meet the dog where they're at and there are no gadgets that will "fix" (extremely heavy air quotes) them.

A leash is not just a restraint, it's a communication device. Even with a dog who is leash reactive, if there's a trigger that shuts down their ears, I can still use the leash and my body to block them from the trigger, if need be. I can preempt a reaction by turning us around.

I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but it never ever seemed like the appropriate tool for the job.

If they start doing something that's dangerous to themselves or others the thing is to stop the bad thing from happening. Aggravating them seems counterproductive.

For reasons I've spent a fair bit of time with large, reactive and not well socialized dogs trying to get them to trust humans and receive love again, and also function in mixed company.

At no point have electronic collars ever entered the picture.

Not all genres all the same, not all are collaborative. But when you replace everything with perfectly aligned samples you're robbing yourself of the possibility of a beautiful fucked moment. And that's just sad.

It's the same in the studio. Yeah, we could cut every instrument separately to a click. At least it'll be mediocre, right? But then when you're mixing you're fighting to create something coherent out of a pile of parts. Nobody is reacting. There's no bleed reinforcing the sound. Just bits.

There's something unholy about the fear of fucking up completely removing the possibility of something transcendent happening.

Some of my favorite on-stage memories are from a fuck-up followed by a beautiful recovery. A mistake leading to everyone else figuring shit out in the span of a bar.

Absolute funniest bit in live music is when a big DJ is squirming behind the decks, twisting knobs and all that, and then the camera cuts to the faders and you see everything is muted except one that’s playing the pre-recorded mix.
