"He/Him." Tangata Tiriti. Not sure how to put this: I am a side account from somebody dealing with harassment. Happy to clarify in DMs?

One reason I should never enter politics is I could imagine far too many uses for a 78 hour mix tape made up of nothing but distinct, non-repeating covers of The Day The Nazi Died.

The audience applauded as Luxon asserted that the 400,000 people wanting work or more work would actually fit perfectly into the 20,000 available vacancies.
He then urged young people to have some get up and go. Parents looked worried by this comment - how would they afford to get their kids to Aus?

Unemployed school leavers need to “get off the couch, stop playing PlayStation and go find a job”, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has told Rotorua business leaders.

The audience applauded his “tough-love” message yesterday, linking the city’s high unemployment rate to poor school attendance.

We should want better things for everyone in our society than aspiring to a pat on the head from capitalism

Being in paid work sucks, actually. Even the most fulfilling job becomes a grind by the simple fact of having to navigate an economic model that atomises your life into a series of unbalanced financial transactions. When you HAVE to do something to survive it can't give you unalloyed satisfaction

"Youths playing Xbox all day need a good kick up the pants" is the exact same rhetoric as "women having babies for the benefit" and "migrants are lazy but also stealing our jobs" amd "disabled people just need to ~believe in themselves" the message is Only Paid Work Is Good, So You Must Love It

It tells you a lot, the way politicians (not just National Party ones) take dismissive, vicious swings at young people.

a) Their actual target is people 45+
b) Who also hate young people
c) Also they assume young people won't vote
d) So who cares if it's true, it gives people an excuse to be mean

I'm a historian. Sewage systems have saved more lives than any medical intervention. Vaccines are second and antibiotics third.

Prior to the 1880s, the urban annual death rate was ~25%; it dropped to ~0.5% in under a generation.

Support your sewage system. Dispose of bodies responsibly.

The point isn't really to win over existing supporters though. Instead, it's broadly 3 things:
1) Deter anyone current non-supporters from moving to support them
2) Winning over *anti-racist* voters to oppose them
3) Delegitimising them as not deserving the same benefit of doubt due to other parties

My best guess is that Shakespeare and 19th century texts were added and made compulsory, and Māori and Pacific authors removed, is because it made the senior English curriculum more aligned with Elizabeth Rata's vision.

Remember: she started as its lead writer.

It's a long read, but here's why.
Recapturing the Senior English Curriculum
2024 had been a good year for Stanford. The speed bump that was the outcry over the senior English curriculum and the lack of consultation had been smoothly managed by her, and she was on a roll wi…

why is no one talking about the new animorphs covers? i love that the next evolution up from crazy photoshop distortions is "someone who at minimum has looked at a LOT of furry art"

I am LOVING the new Animorphs covers. They keep the spirit of the originals but add a whole new level of organic flow/dynamic motion.

Also, this claim:

"Go look at other Western economies around the world and how fast they count their vote. We must be the slowest folk on the planet."

Australia - voting day 3 May and final results 12 June (37 days)
NZ - voting day 14 Oct and final results 9 November (26 days)

Hey Chris Luxon, maybe have a wee read of the Electoral Act 1993, s7 before trying to play the Big Business CEO, huh?

"The Electoral Commission must act independently in performing its statutory functions and duties, and exercising its statutory powers, under—
(a) this Act ..."
'Slowest folk on the planet': Luxon says he wants votes to be counted faster
The prime minister says he expects the Electoral Commission to speed up the official vote count after an election.

When we were living in the Netherlands it too 255 days for them to form a govt after the 2017 election. 🤣 Like sure the votes were counted but we're not the slowest in the world at anything except a CGT. LOL.
