"this is not who we are" is 90% of the time a normative statement of aspiration, it's not an empirical claim of "these events have never taken place in this country before". one of the most obnoxious genres of "actually..." is reacting like it's the latter when it's clearly the former.

Yes. Do you know how many families are being supported by their neighbors right now? Families afraid to leave home being fed by their neighborhoods; immigrant communities feeding the old hippies standing on their street corners with whistles in 10-degree snowstorms. They cannot break us

a few things I want people to get from this:
-how tense it is here. I was death-gripping the steering wheel during this, even watching it makes me tense up
-how organized the community is. the rapid response networks are ENORMOUS and highly effective
-how completely the city is united against ICE

Minneapolis Antifa supersoldiers repeatedly provoking Federal Agents by drawing a line in the dirt & daring them to cross that line, over & over again, getting them more & more riled up, crossing line after line, until the last line is right off a cliff, per reports.
Minneapolis residents are painting tunnels onto brick walls and ICE agents are running into them. This is not funny.

NEW: As the chaotic scenes from Minnesota play out around the clock, Axios has learned that some Trump advisers quietly are talking about "recalibrating" the White House's approach.

Trump's team recently reviewed private GOP polling that showed support for his immigration policies falling.
Trump's immigration erosion worries his team
Some Trump advisers quietly are talking about "recalibrating" the White House's approach — though it's unclear what changes Trump would embrace, if any.

New party identification polling from Gallup this week shows Americans are moving against Trump faster than they did in his first term. Adults were R+4 in 2024, now D+8. That 12-pt drop is 3x the change in the first year of his first term.

I think most people tend to think other people are afraid but in reality if you dropped ICE goons outside a polling place in a deep blue area everyone would be so angry they would probably set a record for turnout at that location.

If a licensed engineer committed this level of professional misconduct they’d be booted from the profession immediately
The thing is, some people can make mistakes, get things wrong, be careless, etc. But that’s not what Jennings did here. Jennings knowingly, purposefully and intentionally lied to utterly distort what was said, which CNN pays him to do every day. CNN is the enabler of this.

Bouie keeps getting slammed for these sensible and sober minded Takes because there are people who've come to see anything short of maximal Doomerism as somehow complacency - you're saying I *shouldn't* feel maximally bad!??? Yet it is obvious on reflection that maximal doomerism breeds complacency.
There are places where Trump, as president, has broad freedom of action. And there are places where Trump, as president, has been able to act unilaterally because the main point of opposition, Congress (and SCOTUS), support his program. (1/?)

Solar and renewables aren't replacing fossil fuels, just as EVs aren't replacing gas-powered cars.

There is no energy transition.

It's just more and more and more...

It’s time for rural communities to pay their fair share
Another critical piece of missing context in this story: tax dollars flow from the MSP metro to rural Minnesota. People in the city subsidize the lifestyles of people living in the country minnesotareformer.com/2023/12/04/t...
