It's quite the stark contrast where lower speed limits (i.e. 20 or 25 MPH) are found in Chicago today.

Data is from OpenStreetMap as of 02/19/2025
See the data for yourself overpass-turbo.eu/s/1Z3U
A screenshot of streets in Chicago's Northside where the speed limit is 20 or 25 mph from data queried from OpenStreetMap. There are a lot of streets in the image that matched the query. The image is approximately bound on the North around Howard Ave the East by Lake Michigan the South by Pershing Rd and the West by Cumberland Ave. A screenshot of streets in Chicago's Southside where the speed limit is 20 or 25 mph from data queried from OpenStreetMap. If you are paid bi-weekly, does your payslip include the dates of the two work weeks? I.E
09/01/2025-09/07/2025 30 hours worked
09/08/2025-09/14/2025 27 hours worked
iliekmudkip.bsky.social
Unfortunately, yes if the total 57 hours that you work was split between the 1st week of your pay period and the 2nd week of your pay period. Say for example 30 hours in week 1 and 27 hours in week 2.

Over 40% of corn grown in Indiana is used to make ethanol that cars burn. One acre of corn yields about 16,500 vehicle-miles per year of ethanol, which sounds high until you realize that one acre of solar yields about 2,700,000 vehicle-miles per year: 16,000% more driving for a given plot of land.

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

New from me:

Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.

Good news! “Chicago is set to have the largest community air monitoring network in the world with nearly 280 sensors”. Data is supposed to be available early in 2026.

RIP actor & Chicago native Ron Dean.

He interrogated Dr. Richard Kimble in THE FUGITIVE, he dropped Andy off at detention in THE BREAKFAST CLUB, he was shot by Harvey Dent in THE DARK KNIGHT, he was Marty Crane's poker buddy on FRASIER, and so much more.

Cities are developing a new approach to developing housing: Integrating it into mixed-use library projects. These investments improve neighborhood vitality, add housing & improve services.

In new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, I create a database of such projects & point to success stories ⏬
Aging Libraries Could Offer Cities a Unique Opportunity to Build New Housing While Improving Public Services
Since 2000, more than 1,800 apartment units have been built in combined library-housing developments. These projects not only address local housing needs but…

NEW: I spoke to clergy and faith leaders who've joined protests at the Chicago-area ICE facility.

All say ICE is also violating their religious freedom, and one is arguing it in court. religionnews.com/2025/10/07/i...

I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk

What DHS pulled in Chicago on Tuesday is wildly unconstitutional. They smashed down almost every door in the building, dragged entire families into the street, and detained people for hours ("Kavanaugh stops").

Ms. Fisher was held for five hours and another senior citizen was held for three hours.
Rodrick Johnson, 67, is one of many residents who were detained by federal agents during the South Shore raid. A U.S. citizen, he said agents broke through his door and dragged him out in zip ties.

Johnson said he was left tied up outside the building for nearly three hours before agents finally let him go.

“I asked [agents] why they were holding me if I was an American citizen, and they said I had to wait until they looked me up,” Jones said. “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer. They never brought one.”

Well this is (not) reassuring: a TFR (temporary flight restriction) just went up over the city from now through October 12th for "Special Security Reasons."

Not that this makes it any better, but this TFR is specifically for drones (UAS) provided you don't have prior approval or authorization.
This image displays a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) detailing temporary flight restrictions around Chicago, Illinois, near O'Hare International Airport. The restriction zone spans a 15 nautical mile radius centered around the O'Hare VOR/DME, from the surface to 400 feet above ground level. The NOTAM, issued for special security reasons, is in effect from October 1, 2025, at 1445 UTC until October 12, 2025, at 2359 UTC. It highlights that no Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operations are allowed in the area unless authorized under specific conditions for defense, law enforcement, or other critical missions.

TFR stands for Temporary Flight Restriction, which is ban on flying drones in a specific area and for a short period of time.

The FAA has banned drone flights within the entire Chicago area for 12 days.
