this crystallizes why, despite truly heroic solidarity and activism, i can’t quite get in the “we’re going to win” mindset right now. the harm is so active and there’s so much violence we don’t even know about. people are being turned into ghosts.

From a Minnesotan: a hearty HELL NO to this. This man is a professional political consultant in DC raising $$ for a political party. There are endless better places to donate to actually help people here suffering and fighting against this nazi invasion. Here’s a start:

you know this guy is a FOR REAL photographer because he's telling the story of his brutal, unconditional arrest by federal goons and can't help but slip in a gear review
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

Getty photographer was tackled by about 50 agents while covering Whipple.

He threw his camera at another photographer to prevent it from being confiscated.

Also, Jonathon Ross *was* an ICE trainer for a decade.

It's not just "give ICE more money" but specifically, literally "pay Jonathon Ross more money and give him more people to train to shoot mothers in the face"
Make no mistake: "Give ICE better training" = Give ICE more money

When politicians tell you shit like that, they're literally ignoring everything that's happening and arguing that ICE should get MORE money.

They've already done it for half a century with the cops.

I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

ICE has kidnapped so many people from their cars that the city had to put out this statement. Let that sink in.
Vehicles that are abandoned due to an ICE detention and towed to the City's impound lot will be released to their owners or a representative at no cost.

Last year, centrists were arguing that Democrats should adopt extreme-right anti-immigrant positions to keep up with what they claimed was the tide of public opinion.

Now nearly half of the population agrees that ICE should be outright abolished.

ICE has only existed since March 2003, by the way.

Madison Sheahan is a 28-year-old former political aide to Kristi Noem with little law enforcement experience before being named ICE Deputy Director. Prior reporting said she was mocked internally as "fish cop" because she somehow got made director of Louisiana Fish and Wildlife in 2024.

Great piece overall— would add as an addendum that it's very informative who the US does *not^ encourage to rebel against oppression— the Palestinians, Lebanese, Egyptians, etc.
my new piece in FP: The US keeps telling people to rise up against their regimes, then leaving them to die. Hungary, Iraq, Syria...now Iran? I try to offer an explanation for this very consistent pattern. (gift link) foreignpolicy.com/2026/01/16/t...

NEW — ICE violence has spread well beyond Minneapolis, with agents landing in small cities like St. Cloud. I spoke with Alice Valentine, a local queer trans woman, who protested ICE on Monday and was pepper sprayed, beaten and jailed as a result, along with her girlfriend.

This is Alice's story:

Public opposition to ICE and their lawless conduct is precisely the type of 70/30 issue liberal and moderate strategists and pundits claim to valorise, but the entirety of Democratic Party leadership is trying to ensure ICE's continuity and even strengthen it. This is an ideological decision.
