I think we're going to discover how effective the Lina Kahn approach of enforcing archaic laws is. Sure you can argue that it's playing whack-a-mole with SCOTUS, but I think we too often rush to the assumption that we need new laws to address current problems. Sometimes we already have the tools.
SCOTUS, in its current instantiation, will very significantly stand in the way of a Dem administration bringing in new regulations.

Valentine's Day and the 100th day of school (why is this a thing?) have conspired to make me the worst parent ever this morning.

So that's fun.

I don't understand NBC coverage of these Olympic games. the 3 hour long "Primetime Olympics" broadcast seems to have huge chunks of drone footage with the caption "coverage will resume shortly".

the problem with not being online all day is that you realize how incomprehensible all the conversations are without context.

only solution is to obviously double down on being online

Absolutely dominate. This team is going to be good for years.

Sufjan has like 20 of these, but what I've been jamming out most to lately is Phil Collins "Something Happened on The Way to Heaven"
Deleted a post about “what’s your least favorite song” because the vibes are bad enough already.

Instead: what’s your favorite song that has a long title, say at least 6 words long?

Mine: “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” (Pearl Jam)

Hard not to compare them to the team across the street--who won a championship, reinvented themselves, and are on the verge of winning another championship. An organization who has little challenge recruiting talent to Seattle despite playing during The Long Dark.
I have no idea how the 2026 season will go. If I had to guess the M’s should be fairly good again (85-90 wins). But the false limit this franchise puts on its ceiling combined with the preening arrogance they carry themselves with just makes it really hard to earnestly care or root for their success

Tattoo progress today. I got the coffee mug and stained glass cross back in the fall. Took the opportunity of my birthday to add the trumpet vine.

as someone who has filled out lots of job applications--similar to some other areas where we talk about progressive values having unintended consequence-- striving to eliminate bias from the interview process has made it bad/impossible to seem fun and weird (complementary) in the application process

you can get conspiracy pilled even if you don't participate in the conspiracy. you start thinking that you need to understand, and end up as Charlie Day with the red thread thinking the global right is controlling trump. good way to end up hopelessly depressed and ineffectual in the actual struggle.
If you'd like to see what the right thinks might I suggest looking at anything that the federal government is doing right now?
these people seem like idiots

I got a new coat over the weekend, the Hawks won, and we had a good day doing good at work.

Thanks, Monday.

Not to shamelessly hope-skeet on main but I think the NFL picking Bad Bunny, Green Day, and Brandi Carlile as Super Bowl performers is a positive sign that they don't think things are going to stay this way long-term.

It also makes you a better messenger. Stop yelling at people that we should do xyz because of your grad thesis on Marx. Start talking about why doing XYZ progressive policy aligns with their community values. Mutual aid is very strong in lots of conservative communities. There's common ground!
there are some people in my replies showing how UNinvolved they are saying PROGRESSIVES CAN'T WIN RED DISTRICTS -- and like.... not right away, probably. But we flipped the school board. We got bike lanes. We pressured a mayor to order the local PD not to help ICE. Local politics isn't ONE election.

the question to ask about this is, okay, he wants to cancel the midterms. how does he get the VA state board of elections to cancel the midterms? how does he get the georgia board of elections to do it? how does he convince republican house members to quit their jobs and give up their paychecks?
Trump says a lot of deranged shit, but, per this Reuters article — and the threats of invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota this morning — he is very clearly exploring how to cancel the midterms.

Folks, Trump has brought the full force of ICE to bear on a mid-sized city and he can't even stop the demonstrations there. He's not going to be able to cancel the midterm elections by fiat or station his goons outside more than a handful of polling places.

There should be zero uncontested seats in November.

run everywhere.
The absolute feeding frenzy to get the Democratic nomination for the more competitive (still strong republican) house district in Montana makes me feel like somebody is thinking some pretty out-of-reach districts are going to be in reach.

Not disagreeing with Tyler: From Paul Revere's ride to the end of the American Revolutionary War was almost a decade, same with the French Revolution from the Estates-General to Napoleon's first defeat. History gets flattened, and we want to measure our days in Scaramucci's.

Not how history works.
*looking around brunch* where is the outrage?
I see this take around from time to time and totally disagree. ICE just murdered a woman standing up to them. No Kings is among the largest protests in history.

The complacency is coming from elites in media, business, universities, and the Democratic leadership

one of my main pieces of advice to folks is volunteer at a food bank or community helpline. it's going to connect you to the most vulnerable members of your community, and I promise you will feel better about the world than you do when you're mad online.
One of the best things that's been said to me recently is "I like you b/c you're kind." I'm so mad right now. I'm so mad often. But I'm going to do everything I can to be so so so damned kind. We'll take care of each other, however we can, and be kind. And kindness includes fighting for one another.

we have too many dystopian stories and not enough utopias. even beyond politics, we've lost our imagination for a better world.

we don't have jetpacks because we stopped dreaming about jetpacks.
This place needs some Innocuous Discourse pronto. Quote this with a take that’s not political or aggressive
