The story behind my display name is that many people commonly mispronounce my surname as “who” or “how”. It’s actually pronounced similarly to “ho” in Mandarin. Associate my surname with the resounding laughter of 🎅🏽 — and my laughter (bonus if you know the connection to my sign name in ASL!)

Happy World Linguistics Day! I share a public service announcement about signed languages from @kemmorey.bsky.social — and a constant reminder to look at deaf people & their lives not just “data”. The stigma of deafness is a global phenomenon rooted in attitudes, not the deafness itself.

I fundamentally do not understand why anyone is interested in these parlor tricks. It's outperformed nothing because recombining word patterns into a text isn't writing. Writing is born out of human experiences filtered through a unique sensibility. Only Han Kang can make more Han Kang.
Put writing high quality literary text on the list of things that AIs used to not be able to do but now can do

this is genuine psychological warfare and it seems to happen to every professional woman at some point:
At some point during my PhD, a senior male colleague told me that the only reason another senior male colleague was interested in my research was to get into my pants. Double whammy: apart from harassment fears, that made me think that my research was garbage.

Could argue the misogyny Summers expressed both publicly while president of Harvard and in emails to Epstein says more about the culture at our most elite institutions than any of the frontpage freakouts over academia in the past few years but hey

in Paris, I had to see a same-day doctor & I found one. was gravely warned that, as a foreigner, I’d have to pay 32 euros & I laughed & laughed

a friend there said “make sure you get X kind of doctor, not Y, because the Y kind charges 74 WHOLE EUROS” & once again I bitterly, bitterly laughed 😭
My ACA current plan is going from $385/mo to $821/mo.

I teach students linguistics theories by introducing them to variation of “theory” in natural and social sciences and comparing them to conspiracy theory — but never thought about adding color theory to my lecture until just now.

The fact that a sitting president is willing to sacrifice SNAP benefits, something that millions of people, should tell you who he is there to serve. He does not care that it will starve children. He does not care that people will die, but above all, he does not care about the rule of law.
Trump is staring down a noon deadline on Monday to update a federal judge who ruled that they must disburse food assistance funds.

This comes as tens of millions of Americans continue to go without SNAP benefits due to the shutdown, which is just days away from becoming the longest in U.S. history.
