Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:
We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly
Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout “small government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

If you don't care about disabled and chronically ill people, you're an asshole.

And furthermore, no one is immune from becoming disabled or chronically ill, especially if they catch COVID. That includes you.

WEAR A MASK & GET YOUR VAX.

Masking in public, especially when you're indoors or around a lot of people outdoors (such as at a concert/protest or other crowded event), is a really easy way to 1) show solidarity with disabled and chronically ill people and 2) not get anyone sick.

COVID is still here and still dangerous.

To wrap up #BannedBooksWeek, here are banned books that are in my apartment right now! These books have shaped me as a person and as a writer, and I'm so sad that students in some places are being denied access to them.

Dragonfly Books changed my life! I won a gift certificate to Dragonfly for coming in second at an open mic in Decorah, and I used that gift certificate to buy the book that got me back into fandom and made me love writing again.

Chapter 3 of John Rich & The Big Picture—in which John, a consummate professional, must deal with a man flirting with him.
Somehow his worst nightmare?

LEVEL UP comes out next Friday, October 17th!

If a cozy gamer romcom sounds like your thing, then maybe read it, I guess?

You're allowed to take care of yourself, and I'm glad you're aware of that! Both because you won't be able to do stuff in the future if you don't take care of yourself now, and also because you're a human being deserving of care, full stop.

This is the kind of book that can help kids connect with the literary canon and see themselves in the classics. Banning it won't stop kids from being gay or trans but will make them feel more alone.

Another book I love for #BannedBooksWeek: Most Ardently by @thegabecole.bsky.social! It's a fantastic take on Pride and Prejudice, featuring a transmasc Bennet sibling, gay autistic Darcy, and secret queer clubs!

Diverse books are often diverse in more than one way, and banning books with trans rep can take all sort of other rep with it when authors are writing intersectionally.

It's still #BannedBooksWeek, and today I'm grateful for May the Best Man Win by @zrellor.bsky.social. It was the first book I ever read with good #ActuallyAutistic rep, and it made me feel SO seen.

Censoring queer books makes queer kids feel more alone, but it can't make them stop being queer.

It's still #BannedBooksWeek, and today I'd like to celebrate the book Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi. It's a great story about two girls from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds overcoming their negative first impressions of each other and falling in love.

It's #BannedBooksWeek, and I think banning nonfiction like this really gives away the game: book banning is a campaign to try to limit people's access to facts and perspectives that don't fit a narrow narrative that people in power can control.

Banning books that depict things that teenagers are really going through does not protect them; it leaves them without resources and role models.
lpetersonwrites.bsky.social
This #BannedBookWeek, I'm grateful for Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert, which offers an unflinching look at teenage mental health issues and the costs of keeping each other’s secrets. Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the first time I talked someone out of suicide, so this book means a lot.
