It’s the 2025 “books I’ve read” thread.

I made a mistake and had three non-fiction books on the go at once. This always slows me right down.

The parade of these clippings from Prof Roberts is borderline hysterical. This is exactly the devil’s bargain with meaningless hierarchical celebrity that television routinely demands. Clunky slips aside, I like Rylan as a presenter, but I wish we’d notice how fucking weird it is.

I think terms like disinformation and misinformation are very useful if working in that field (and you are far more involved than I am). I also think the jargon reduces the emotional impact. "You've been fed disinformation" versus "You've been lied to."

ChatGPT discerned that sending an initial message on Monday midmorning would set the right pace. "Then it gave me some options for what the message could be," says Rich.
"Keep it light, warm, and low-stakes so it reads as genuine interest without urgency," the bot advised. "Something like: Hey Sarah, still laughing about [tiny shared moment/reference if you've got one] - good to meet you!" Rich went back and forth with ChatGPT until he felt they'd hit upon exactly the right message ("Hey Sarah, it was lovely to meet you") but sadly she never replied, he says. "It's been two weeks now."

Been getting the old VHS playing and trying to solve tracking. Husband wandered in and said “that’s quite good” at this moment.

We are stupidly long lived as well, but sadly only my youngest grandparent (born 1900) was still around when I was little.

My parents (born in the 1920s) provided our kid with first hand accounts of WW2 to take to primary school in the 2010s.

I’m a late child of a late child: my maternal grandmother was 43 when she had my mum, and mum was 45 three weeks after she had me.

My maternal grandmother was born in 1883.

I also had a late child so they were born 127 years after their great grandmother.
