Just hear me out: maybe the Democratic Party’s problem is that the party leadership is full of people incapable of realizing that Matt Yglesias has terrible political instincts.

In the truest sense of the phrase, "head's gone".
Thomas Frank turned up five minutes ago and already started lecturing them for "not being real fans".

Absolutely catastrophic PR.

Leaving aside the whys and wherefores of booing your keeper after he makes a howler for just a moment, what on earth does Thomas Frank think he can teach WHL season ticket holders about being a true fan?

We seem to be collectively forgetting that the entire point of a Tory press is to undermine a Labour government, regardless of the actual facts of what that Labour government is doing or how many missteps it is making.
I’m enjoying the shuddering 180 from “Rachel Reeves should resign because the economy is in the toilet and we are all doomed” to “Rachel Reeves should resign because the economy is not in the toilet and we are not all doomed”. It really is the perfect reverse ferret.

Incomprehensible that, after that absolute avalanche of drivel, anyone continued to take Glasman seriously, and yet
always worth reminding that Blue Labour aren't just conservatives, they are actually insane people.
Not sure - 14 years into project - Blue Labour ever previously set out actual proposals before, so this is new

1. Abolish Treasury
2. Leave ECHR
3. Closr/refound half of unis
4. Double army size for anti-EU alliance with Ukraine
5. PM to lead grooming inquiry with arrest powers + televised trials

When I was young, the Independent was the best designed newspaper on the stands. This is what it looks like now: a par of text sandwiched between two ads, an auto-play video and a pointless and intrusive swipe function. It's as if it hates the work of its own writers.

Rather unusual for a chancellor to be told to resign for not increasing taxes as expected in light of better-than-expected revenue forecasts.

Huge respect to the papers for finding both an 88 year old worried about the tax bill on her 6 bedroom Kensington house and a 20 year old fretting about only being able to save £12k a year tax free.
Top work all around. These are not easy case studies to find.

This is absolutely true.
Not really a comment on this story, but I think we should try to make it easier and more normalised to downsize in your 60s.

If left too late, moving house can be incredibly disorientating - and you don’t tend to know it’s too late until it is

Dismal framing. Every aspect of most asylum seekers’ lives is controlled & paid for by the Home Office. They can’t work, are told where to live & have no autonomy or dignity. So they aren’t *choosing* to use taxis & don’t need to be “banned” from doing so. The HO just needs to get its act in order.
Government to ban asylum seekers from using taxis
The ban is set to come in February and any exemptions will have to be signed off by the Home Office.

The problem with Thatcherism is that eventually you run out of other people's assets to sell.
The central delusion of Thatcherism is the idea politicians can destroy the postwar settlement and replace it with nothing, which in practice turns out to always be panicking governments shoring up the systems they vandalised fuck out of, using sticky tape and wood glue.
