As longtime observers of struggles to establish peace and justice in the US and around the world, The Nation is honored to nominate the city of Minneapolis and its people for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
“The Nation” Nominates Minneapolis for the Nobel Peace Prize
With their resistance to violent authoritarianism, the people of Minneapolis have renewed the spirit of Dr. King’s call for “the positive affirmation of peace.”

I keep seeing posts going "when ICE comes to MY city, we'll be out in the streets even harder" and man, I get that sentiment but I need everyone to understand that the work in Minneapolis is partly confrontational but MORE IMPORTANTLY aaallll the stuff organized in the background to help neighbors

I understand that all of us have to live our lives and therefore simply cannot think deeply about the fact that the current fascist President of the United States is deeply unwell.

I do think, however, that it is the JOB of CONGRESS and the CABINET to protect the country FROM HIM. NOW.

The word armadillo is borrowed from Spanish and simply means “little armored one.” But an even better word for an armadillo, in my opinion, is the Nahuatl ayotochtli. It means “turtle rabbit.”

The good news is all the brazen, cartoonish corruption makes it easier to run on an anti-oligarchy, good government platform. The bad news is you still need candidates who want to do that

It is wild to me that a military incursion to steal another country’s resources so the president can have a personal slush fund in Qatar is like the 5th most scandalous thing currently happening.
this is a straightforward impeachable offense for trump, vance, rubio and every other person down the line who enabled it and the framers would have thought impeachment for it did not go nearly far enough
Marco Rubio: "The oil proceeds are being deposited into an account that ultimately will become a US Treasury blocked account here in the US. We will say 'this is what this money can be spent on.' They will submit to us a budget request -- 'we want to use the money on these things.'"

USA Today needs to retract this story.

1. The criticism is not widespread.

2. The only people attacking Walz in the article are Trump appointees or allies.

3. Holocaust survivors and historians have validated his perspective for decades.

I've said many times over the past year that the task before the left of center is to build new, functioning institutions in place of the old and failed ones. I think Minneapolis is the perfect example: state and local govts no help, courts a mixed bag, but the people built their own networks
I cannot stress enough that the American people protested, donated, subscribed, and voted in record numbers in 2018 and 2020 and then those institutions that they propped up in opposition to Trump sought to accommodate him instead. And here we are.
I continue to think that we won’t see a 2017-style liberal media addiction/subscription surge. Anger at how the media covered this, no more sense that something could break and end his presidency… I just see a lot of people tuning out for a bit.

This is your regular reminder that the data broker industry must be destroyed.
2. ICE is buying your private location data from sleazy data brokers through a legal loophole. I've had a bill to stop this since 2021. I'm renewing my push to get it passed into black letter law as soon as possible.

This is one of my favorite charts because the obvious implication is ... obvious, but you absolutely are not allowed to say it out loud in US public discourse.

Imagine a paramilitary gang kills 2 observers over 2 weeks, then shows up at your home to say, "You, observer, we know where you live."

That's a death threat.

If it happened to me or a colleague when I was a human rights observer in N. Ireland, we would've lodged complaints with three govts.
One human rights observer in Maine said agents followed her home, blocked off her street, and came to her door to say they know where she lives. Her children are now staying elsewhere, to keep them safe.
Now in Maine: ICE watchers say federal agents are coming to their house to threaten and intimidate them.

And what's more -- now that the people did it, the politicians are noticing and starting to follow suit.

Reminds me of the old line (attributed to various figures):

"There go the people. I must follow them, for I am their leader."
The people of Minnesota did that. Not Schumer and Jeffries, not Walz and Frey, not the standard-bearers of decorum. The People.

I'm gonna add to this that the Dems had ZERO to do with the Bovino firing. It was the tireless work of the good people of MSP standing strong, filming and writing the news with their first hand accounts. The press tried to both sides it. They WANTED to. But the citizens of Minnesota ended this guy
The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced the Democrats have to push their hand immediately. The parallels with the delays and subsequent failures after January 6th are blaring warning signs about what will happen if they don’t go after the issues with ICE and CBP at the root RIGHT NOW.
