I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

And whether your books earn out consistently or not can make a huge difference in whether you can sell future books, and the size of your future advance. Buying a book when it's first released helps an author a lot, not only for "bestseller" status (which can take very few copies!), but also--

IMO the weird exception some supposed leftists seem to make for condemning-the-theft-of-labor-except-art-lol-steal-that-shit is just a weird intersection with puritan "if you enjoy yourself, it's not a real job" brainworms.

"fun" job = member of the leisure class (ROFL) = fair game. Somehow.
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

Publishers and corporations can be exploitative, absolutely; IP law is objectionable on several fundamental grounds, fully agree; a system of universal basic income would be better for artists, I'm on board - but until those changes are in place we're talking about stealing

I know we know this, but pirates need to get better at talking about why they actually pirate books. Stop pretending it's about authors.
i mean it's odd to say "tell us how you make your money" and then not actually let us respond, but

Hello, I make my money from writing books and through the kindness of people who bail me out of emergencies on ko-fi and kick in a few bucks a month on patreon

my biggest advance was $15k per book

It's getting frustrating and sad that I can trace so much of this (-waves hands at piracy discourse, ChatGPT discourse, the world generally-) back to how small and insecure people feel.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Here's the thing: the problem here isn't that NVIDIA is doing circular accounting (necessarily), it's that receivables are growing and so is inventory, which makes people worried things are being shipped without payment. It could be fine!

I believed things were fine more before I read this memo.
I mean, it'd be even funnier if they didn't even realize they were doing circular accounting with all of these deals, so this was totally sincere on their part. It would really underline how much this is run by people who are way out of their depth given the scale of everything they're involved in.
