i've debated for a while about starting a blog of some sort; i have a lot to say that i don't usually feel like converting into microblogging format. i'm going to try out Ghost for a while and see how it goes. it'll probably be mostly housing stuff, but today it's about colonialist violence.

I'm back on my BS, idly downloading data from the albemarle GIS site. looking at Land Use Primary Dwelling Units Number as a count of dwelling units by Year, with dev/rural on color, shows two things:
1) 2025 was the driest build year for AC since 2016
2) the rural area (orange) sees steady building
stacked bar chart showing dwelling units built by year. blue is development area, orange is rural area; orange is low but steady, blue is spiky but declining.

I want very badly to tax the shit out of our rich folks, eminent domain buildings from shitty landlords, and implement a broad and comprehensive public housing program. I also think it is a terrible idea to hinder the private construction of new housing until we figure out how to do that.

folks is it good when the minimum annual salary for the 600 jobs directly created by the new AstraZeneca plant is equal to the Area Median Income? is that a good thing?

santa and mascot-costume elephant stand behind Callista Gingrich and her husband Newt. Callista's golden dome of hair seems more artificial than the big floppy mascot trunk on the elephant. newt's face is blurred and disfigured. they are doing some sort of book signing.

During the Trump era, political violence has become an increasingly urgent problem. Elected officials from both parties are struggling to respond. Balmer had pleaded guilty in mid-October, not just to arson and terrorism but to attempted murder. But Shapiro was still reluctant to focus on his attacker. “The prosecutor felt it was important to introduce into evidence the bomber’s claims that he did that because of ‘what I did to the Palestinians,’ so clearly there was some motivation because of my faith,” Shapiro said. “But I think it is dangerous for you or anyone else to think about those who perpetrate these violent attacks as linear thinkers, meaning that they have a left-wing ideology or a right-wing ideology, or that they have a firm set of beliefs the way you might or I might. These are clearly irrational thinkers. And I think that’s true of others who have claimed lives, whether it’s Speaker Hortman’s or Charlie Kirk’s.” right-wing homicides are far more common than left-wing homicides Across both datasets, we find that radical acts perpetrated by individuals associated with left-wing causes are less likely to be violent. In the United States, we find no difference between the level of violence perpetrated by right-wing and Islamist extremists.
