i've debated for a while about starting a blog of some sort; i have a lot to say that i don't usually feel like converting into microblogging format. i'm going to try out Ghost for a while and see how it goes. it'll probably be mostly housing stuff, but today it's about colonialist violence.
Quick Note: Colonialist Violence, July 3 2025
This morning, while waiting to see if Republicans strip the life from millions of Americans, I watched news coverage from Al Jazeera revealing video of U.S. contractors firing on Palestinians seeking ...

I'm back on my BS, idly downloading data from the albemarle GIS site. looking at Land Use Primary Dwelling Units Number as a count of dwelling units by Year, with dev/rural on color, shows two things:
1) 2025 was the driest build year for AC since 2016
2) the rural area (orange) sees steady building

I wrote some real quick thoughts on the three notched trail route options - I don't think there's any truly disastrous choices here, but I do think each segment of the route presents a choice: is this a scenic byway or an alternative commuting route? which-side-are-you-on.ghost.io/three-notche...
Three Notched Trail Route Options - Thoughts
At last! Route options for the Three Notched Trail are out now for public feedback. I've had a few days to mull on them since the public meeting where they were presented. You can view the maps in the...

I want very badly to tax the shit out of our rich folks, eminent domain buildings from shitty landlords, and implement a broad and comprehensive public housing program. I also think it is a terrible idea to hinder the private construction of new housing until we figure out how to do that.

folks is it good when the minimum annual salary for the 600 jobs directly created by the new AstraZeneca plant is equal to the Area Median Income? is that a good thing?

1) I am adding this question to my list of meeting facilitator icebreaker questions.

2) kat abughazaleh is extremely cool

3) The Incompleat Folksinger by Pete Seeger
omg. Kat Abughazaleh just posted that if she's elected, she'll swear in on a copy of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower.

If you were elected to public office (never mind whether you'd ever actually run), what book would you swear in on?

It's an actual game plan on the right. They use it for book bans as well. They start with something easy: no porn in libraries. That hooks in the low information folks. Then you slowly broaden the scope until you're yanking any YA that violates Christian nationalism.
one of many parallels between anti-vaxxers & those who oppose gender-affirming care: they start by pretending they have a very specific concern (MMR vaccine, puberty blockers, etc), but once given any sway or say on the matter, they quickly strive to eliminate all of it
Kennedy's zombie ACIP panel just voted to restrict hepatitis B vaccine for newborns. Experts say it will harm children for no reason. www.ms.now/news/rfk-cdc...

ACIP member Dr. Cody Meissner:

"'Do no harm' is a moral imperative. We are doing harm by changing this wording. And I vote no."

Thanks to Michael for keeping us all informed about what’s happening tonight at the Three Notched Trail meeting!
I'm at the Three Notched Trail meeting at Western Albermarle Hugh School. Not gonna skeet too much, but I'll post any major highlights.

Great turnout, probably 100 people here.

There are maps up for major trail sections with 3 route options each. We're to write sticky notes with our thoughts.

it is super "funny" that president pederast stayed up too late ranting about the death of western civilization on truthsocial and is now too eepy to stay awake while his Ssecretaries vie for a crumb of his favor on national television
Trump dozes while Marco Rubio speaks to him directly next to him. Just insane optics.

Folks, it's true: i came outta retirement for One Last Job: break down the Broken Man chapter with two of the greatest to ever do it ("it" being ASOIAF commentary). A genuine honor.
“The Broken Man” speech by Septon Meribald is maybe GRRM’s best writing, so we had to bring in @mmonaco.bsky.social to help us break it all down in one of our longest episodes ever! One of the best chapters in the entire series, a delight to bring this one to you.
Episode 254: A FEAST FOR CROWS, BRIENNE V: "The Hollow Men" ft. special guest Michael is available for everyone! notacastasoiaf.podbean.com/e/episode-25...

Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea

The best American flag is the battle flag of Tecumseh Sherman’s 23rd Corps, made from the tattered remains of Confederate banners.

I agree with this critique although I will add that my critique (additionally) is that these stories do not discuss STATE VIOLENCE, like, you know, the goons kidnapping folks on the street and leaving children in the car.
Yet another long feature article about political violence that refuses to acknowledge the basic reality that right-wing violence is far more common than left-wing violence.

I got to thinking: "What if it's not about the contradiction between the Hernandez pardon and the air strikes, but about the consistency between them?"

As President of Honduras, he used the power of the government to go after certain cartels—primarily the rivals of the Sinaloa Cartel, with whom he
