This will be a long thread on yesterday police massacre in Rio.

In nothern Rio de Janeiro city, there is a couple of hills called Complexo da Penha. It's Comando Vermelho("Red Command", a drug gang), or CV, territory.

CV is the greatest gang in Rio, second in the whole Brazil.

🧵 Awful awful massacre in Brazil
Gente, é o maior massacre no Brasil desde o Araguaia.

I saw Marcus Camby in an elevator and told him I enjoyed watching him play. He said “thanks” and got off the elevator.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

Only tangential here I think, but the sportsbetting industry is stealing this from us (in addition to creating addiction). Sports works as a social lubricant because the real stakes are trivial & the imagined stakes are high. It’s a big game of pretend. Adding $ stakes to it ruins its social role

Yo @durbin.senate.gov, no one is picking up your Senate phone and you don’t even have a voicemail. Vote no on cloture and the spending bill or I will do whatever it takes to make sure the next Senator from Illinois has basic constituent services set up during business hours.

America is a consumer economy premised at its most basic level on trading a robust social safety net and public good for a more threadbare version of those things in exchange for an abundance of cheap consumer conveniences. Love it or hate it, that’s the system we live in.
