One thing I found deeply moving about resistance in the Twin Cities was the universalism of loving your neighbor, the philosophy driving the opposition to the ICE/BP invasion. Trump-administration officials and MAGA influencers have repeatedly called these activists “violent” and said they are involved in “riots.” But the resistance in Minnesota is largely characterized by a conscious, strategic absence of physical confrontation. Activists have made the decision to emphasize protection, aid, and observation. When matters escalate, it is usually the choice of the federal agents. Of the three homicides in Minneapolis this year, two were committed by federal agents. “There’s been an incredible, incredible response from the community. I’ve seen our neighbors go straight from allies to family—more than family—checking in on each other, offering food and rides for kids and all kinds of support, alerting each other if there’s ICE or any kind of danger,” Malika Dahir, a local activist of Somali descent, told me. If the Minnesota resistance has an overarching ideology, you could call it “neighborism”—a commitment to protecting the people around you, no matter who they are or where they came from. The contrast with the philosophy guiding the Trump administration couldn’t be more extreme. Vice President Vance has said that “it is totally reasonable and acceptable for American citizens to look at their next-door neighbors and say, ‘I want to live next to people who I have something in common with. I don’t want to live next to four families of strangers.’” Minnesotans are insisting that their neighbors are their neighbors whether they were born in Minneapolis or Mogadishu. That is, arguably, a deeply Christian philosophy, one apparently loathed by some of the most powerful Christians in America.

One of the reasons (aside from divide and rule and racism) for politicians scapegoating refugees is the climate crisis they are doing nothing about will create hundreds of millions of refugees and they want to dehumanise them in advance.

I think our leaders are planning for climate collapse.

A Twitter DM from June 2022 reads: Hi Mollie, I hope you're well. Just sending a message to say thanks. Early this year you tweeted a Guardian Blind Date, where the guy dragged the girl a little bit. After seeing a couple of people saying some pretty shit things about her on Twitter, I DM'd her to balance it out a bit - just say I thought she came across as really funny and fuck the haters etc (but with no other real intention other than that). Well we hit it off, talked every day for a month (I was working out of the UK at the time) and agreed to meet as soon as I returned. I ended up coming home early and we've been dating ever since. It might sound a bit over the top but l've never felt like this about anyone else before, and I'm pretty sure she feels the same way. I've honestly had some of the best months of my life with her around, and I want to say thanks A Twitter DM from tonight reads: Hey Mollie, I hope you don't mind an update on the above. "LONDON drops down wealth list as super-rich move out," blared a Times splash on 9 April, reporting that there are supposedly 11,300 fewer "dollar millionaires" in the British capital than there were last year - the fastest fall of any global city except Moscow, as the wealthy move their money abroad. The story was also reported by the Telegraph, Express, Daily Mail and Evening Standard, while the Times returned to the subject next day in a 1,300-word feature. Even culture secretary Lisa Nandy responded to the alleged exodus, blaming it on Brexit, not the Labour government. But how accurate are those remarkably specific figures? They come from South Africa-based outfit New World Wealth, commissioned by "advisory firm" Henley & Partners. As pointed out by the New Statesman's Will Dunn back in January, but not mentioned in the Times, Henley & Partners sells advice to rich people about financial planning, and consults governments on "investment migration" policies - so is opposed to higher taxes on rich people. And while New World Wealth puts out seemingly definitive figures, they come up with them using "models" based on tracking the online footprints of a far smaller number of people, without actually knowing where they pay tax. Moreover, when contacted by the Eye, the company offered another important caveat, saying it was "important to note" that "most of" the decline in wealth in London over the past decade was not actually down to people leaving the UK, but poor performance of local businesses and a decline in the FTSE 100, which it also uses to collate its reports estimating relative global wealth. So the super-rich in question may well still be here, just not so super-rich any more. The unreliability of New World Wealth's "data" and what it actually means hasn't stopped hacks reporting on a mass evacuation by the rich over government policies, which has become an accepted truth.
