With so many new folks showing up, I should probably re-introduce myself.

As a teen in the late 90s, and at college in the 2000s, I often heard conservatives say that "A benevolent dictatorship is better than a democracy." And I mean word-for-word, many times, different people.
Was that just a local phenomenon? Because it's why I'm not surprised by the "plenary" thing.
ohnospooky.bsky.social
And just like that, "Plenary" is in the running for every dictionary's Word of the Year.

Naw. I’m a millennial, and this is the most boomer-coded shit I’ve heard in weeks.

There’s definitely a certain kind of user that sees a conversation between folks who are discussing my real world consequences of policy and scared for their livelihoods, and their first instinct is to denigrate them and go off on some absolute bus-rant.
ohnospooky.bsky.social
Thinking today of the kid who interrupted a tariff conversation in the L5R discord back in February to say that soon groceries and housing would be cheaper, healthcare costs would drop, we'd no longer be ruled by a "dictator" and a "cackling hyena," and we were dummies for suggesting otherwise.

Just one more time before I die, I want my country’s elected governing body to be absent of anyone who has ever received the Stone Cold Stunner.

Maybe my most sincere yet nonetheless bonkers belief about MMOs is that if Wildstar had been a tabletop RPG setting for D&D, PBTA, Pathfinder, or really any other system instead of a video game, it would still be around today.
How crazy am I? #ttrpg #mmo

1. More Americans work at the Cheesecake Factory than in the entire coal industry, and that won't change. It's because of automation, not snooty libs.

2. Coal energy is now more expensive than wind and solar.

3. So this means: higher energy prices, more pollution, no jobs benefit. Genius!

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

I spent the summer reporting this essay on why it seems harder than ever to sell a book right now—especially if it isn't a debut and comes with the dreaded "sales track." I'm grateful to the writers, agents, editors, publishers & experts who spoke to me for this piece: thewalrus.ca/the-publishi...

Companies keep betting on the next bestseller. Literature is poorer for it

However much time you think you have, you have less than that.
Tell them you love them. Don't wait until tomorrow or assume they already know. It is better to look a little foolish than to spend the rest of your life wondering if they really knew.

Gentle reminder that in the late '50s, the U.S. government did not censor comics. Comics companies censored themselves.

Not sure why that crossed my mind today but there it is...

Who is more cringe: the cringe-lord who makes the meme, or the cringe-lord who believes it?

Another irony in what happened in Utah (other than the obvious) is that if one really wants to really defy him and what he stood for, and go against his publicly-stated wishes, then one should feel bad for him and have empathy for his family. That would really show them.

RFK Jr. rolled out that old chestnut again about how healthy Americans were in the 60’s, so here’s a fact check.

In 1965:

-42% of American adults smoked; it’s 11% now.

-The infant morality rate was 24.7/1000; it’s 5.6/1000 now.

-Overall life expectancy was 70 years; it's about 77 years now.

Besides each member of the Scooby gang being parodies of different 1950s-1960s subcultures, they were also inspired by main characters from "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," a 1959 CBS sitcom that itself was an adaptation of the teenage romance Dobie Gillis short story series by Max Shulman.

Do you think when Max Shulman wrote the Dobie Gillis short stories in the 1940s, he had the slightest inkling that it would ultimately result in the creation of a specific "mystery team" archetype and one of the most globally-famous cartoon franchises ever created? #animation #scooby-do
An old book from the 1940s, with the author name at the top reading: "Max Shulman." The title is: "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." There is a cartoon depiction of a young man wearing a bow tie standing on the title. The five members of the Scooby-Do Mystery Team, as depicted in the 2010 TV show "Scooby-Do: Mystery Incorporated." From left to right - Velma Dinkly, Shaggy Rogers, Fred Jones, Scooby, and Daphne Blake. The team is posing behind Fred, who is at a computer.
